Good Day
Contemplating making the switch to cast bullets for my Micro-Groove marlin and a friends Henry 45-70.
My recent research has indicated that, all other things being equal, the WFNLBT style bullets seem to have an inherent downrange accuracy deficit as compared to the RNFP style IE the ubiquitous RCBS, LEE, LYMAN RNFP etc. will group tighter for example, out past 100M.
Not sure why this is (allegedly) the case, accuracy that is, with the the WFNLBT vs. the RNFP.
Any input, backed up by repeatable and objective testing only please and thanks would be appreciated.
Might suggest that you go over and check out the "Cast Boolits" forum…. That's about all they do and talk about and there's a whole bunch of them with a whole bunch of experience.
I can't provide any info about accuracy in distances out past 100 meters, but at 100 yards and closer using the Beartooth Pile Driver Jr. (425g), pushed by a stout load of H335, I will get 1.5" 5-shot groupings at 100 yards and one ragged hole at 50 yards.
A good load I have used was with AA2495 and the PJjr, but it was a rather stout load. Recoil became a problem if trying to shoot repeated groups to see if was a uniform load.
3 three-shot groups off of the bench was about enough, then it just wasn't fun.
I would zero one-inch high at 100 yards, but have never shot at any game past about 40 yards or so.
You're going to need to try out several different cast bullets out of your gun(s) with different powders to see which combo your particular gun likes best. There is no "best" bullet when it comes to cast that will work in everyone's gun. I'd suggest you slug your barrel first and find out what the true diameter of your bore is. At that point you can select a bullet that is at least .001" larger than your bore diameter and go from there with different powders to try. As suggested above, going over and visiting the castboolits.com board might be very beneficial to you. That board has a tremendous amount of members and they are dedicated to using cast bullets (or boolits as they like to call them). I've shot a lot of cast out of my several different 45-70s and learned a lot about load development over there. One last thought.....any 45-70 bullet is more than lethal on any white tail deer on this continent. Don't over think which bullet out of that caliber is best for killing deer....they all work well.
