Marlin Cross-bolt "Safety"

To anyone who hates the "lawyer-proof" cross-bolt "safety" that have been factory installed on Marlins for a number of years now, there is a great fix if you have not heard about it yet.

A talented machinist named Clyde Ludwig, up in Wisconsin, makes a replacement plug that eliminates that pesky cross-bolt.  It looks great, and puts your lever-action back in working order as they were made for over 100 years.   The left side is slick to match the receiver, and the right side looks like a screw when installed.  Takes about 5 minutes, and he only charges &#369.95 plus 3 shipping per unit.  What a deal!  I can supply the address if needed.

Some people suggest a number of other solutions, but in my opinion, this is the best.  I love my 45-70 even more now!

Here is the address and phone number.  You can just drop him a note and a check in the mail, but you may enjoy talking to him, when you can reach him.

In my opinion, at &#369.95 plus &#363 shipping, he is performing a public service.  I doubt it's a real money-maker.  I would have paid twice that.
I just hope he doesn't get sued or shut down.  He puts a disclaimer on the instructions to the effect that he doesn't recommend using live ammo with his device installed.  Just a "CYA."  What a time we live in.

Order it, and tell everyone you know!  You'll like it, I promise!

Thanks, Ray, I'll give him a call. I grew up on "old fashioned, politically incorrect" 94s and 336s, so am very familiar with safety practices for lever guns.  I still have a Winchester Trapper .30-30... without the safety, and haven't had an accident yet.

My Marlin .41 Mag., is a great rifle, but I've been displeased with that new fangled contraption safety ever since I bought it, years ago.

I'll give you a hint I learned on another forum. It doesn't look as elegant, but it works and prevents the safety from being flipped on.

With an Unloaded gun....

Remove the screw and take the buttstock off. To the left of the hammer, you will see a very small set screw. It may be lock tight covered.

Move the safety to the fire position, and tighten the allen screw. The screw compresses a spring that holds a ball in the detent in the safety mechanism.

By screwing it in, you lock the ball in the notch on the safety, and it is now locked in the fire postion.

Put the buttstock back on and you are good to go.

Questions ?

You are absolutely correct.  That is a viable option.  You can also tighten it down to make the CBS harder to bump off or on, but still useable, if you like the CBS for some reason.

There is a big dob of paint over that screw that you just scrape off and out of the screw head.  I thought about doing that, but didn't want the CBS projecting out the side of the receiver.  Just looks ugly to me.  Mr. Ludwig's replacement makes the receiver look like the older Marlins, unless you look closely at it.  Hey, for a total of &#3613, its a deal.
