Yesterday I brought home an 1895 Winchester Teddy Roosevelt Commemorative rifle chambered in .405 Winchester. It's a beautiful High Grade model but I bought it to shoot and shoot it I will. I've ordered everything I need to load cast bullets from Buffalo Arms.

Questions: Does anyone here load for the .405 Winchester? I'd appreciate any load suggestions for a 300 grain bullet. I don't plan on going over about 1700 FPS as that will do for my steel silhouette shooting.

Does anyone have a late model reproduction 1895 Winchester that they've put a receiver-mounted peep sight on...... maybe a Williams FP-71?

Rangr44, that looks neat. I called Williams Gun Sights today and ordered an FP-71-TK sight that is supposed to fit my rifle by simply screwing into the existing factory D&T'd holes. That will keep my rifle factory original and give me both windage and elevation adjustments which I'll need.

Do you have a source for brass or have you converted 9.3x74R brass to 405? The cost of loaded ammo is quite high as I'm sure you already know.

I got a "package deal", when I bought the rifle several years ago - For $995, I got the rifle (new) + 200 rounds (10 boxes) Hornady 300gr JSP's.

I think my .405 was one of the original run of .270 overrun's that Miroku took back from Winchester & converted to .405, as it didn't have the peep sight prep (D/T) on the left side of the receiver.

That's a great deal and interesting information as I wasn't aware of the conversion story. At today's prices, the 10 boxes of loaded ammo would be worth almost $400.

One dealer - Bud's Guns - now offers the 1895 Grade 1 rifles in 30-40 Krag at two prices only $4 apart. ($964 & $968) The difference seems to be that the higher priced rifle is an older USRA import while the other is a newer import.

I've admired the 1895's for many years and now I'm anxious to shoot mine!
