Winchester 86

Hi Guys
New member here from Australia.
I need some information on a 1886 Winchester that I lucked into.
I hope you guys can help me out.

Serial number 100x made in September 1886

It has the small button on the left side of the lever which I understand was only used in the first year of manufacture.

I have been told that the original sight is a lyman 21. the one without the screw. I have tracked one down and that is winging its way here now.

What is the correct rear sight ????????????????

The rifle has sling eyes.
What are the correct sling hooks. I have a pair of 73 sling hooks are these correct ones.

Did winchester make or sell a sling for these rifles and could I get a picture of one.

Sorry for all the questions but this the first winchester I have owned.

congratulations, sounds like you have a gem. If you want to get historically correct (great thing to do) invest $23 in this book. too many questions too little time.

Thank you for the book title. I'll get one ordered ASAP
The rifle has been rebarreled in 50/110 exp, but the sights are not original and I would like to keep it as close to original as possible. Every thing else seems to my untrained eye looks pretty right. As I said this my first Winchester.

All the other guns and rifles I own that start with a W are Westley Richards,William Powell and Webley Scott
I know nothing about Winchesters

thanks again

Well, it is a good start on your winchester collection.

With the 50-110, I guess you are thinking cast bullets. Personally, I love the loud "ting" sound of big castes as they eject empty.
good luck in your project. And try to post a picture for us winny lovers.

I will be casting for this one
I have ordered a mould from NEI. 300 grain gas check
Every thing else is ready to go. Brass is primed.dies on the bench. I just need the mouldand some gas checks
I do have a whole load of Woodliegh 440 grain soft points. I could load these but would have to load them in the gun one at a time.

I have five 50 cal moulds laying about the place but none are flat nose or are light enough for this gun or are they gas check

A 650 grn Hoch
580 grn CBE
515 grn Lyman
400 grn CBE
360 grn CBE

I have a 500 X 3 1/4" double rifle and a 500 jefferys also a Meacham highwall 50/110 hence all the 50 calibre moulds.
I will have to kidnap a 10 year old to post photos for you . I wouldn't have a clue how to post photos.

all the best

Hi Guys
Well I finally got the barrel broke in on this 86.
Using 50 grains of ADI 2208 ( Vargent ) a foam wad and 440 grain woodlieghs
traveling at 1350 fps

The group started at about 4" and came into 5 shots inside an inch and a half to which I am very happy with.

I used woodliegh buttets simply because I have a whole load of them for my double rifle.
This bullet is to long to feed through the magizine tube so the had to be single loaded.
The next thing to do is to cast the correct bullet from the NEI mould that I got. (300 grain) Thats is the correct bullet weight for the 50/110 express. I'll let you know how that goes

all the best

Aussie

A suggestion, try using a 2x2 square of Kleenex/toilet paper over top of the powder tamped down with wooden dowel or brass rod. I used this trick when loading light loads using really over sized 255 grain cast bullets amd 13 grains of Unique in a 45-70. I could use my worn brass, but not split for plinking loads. These loads had the noice and recoil of a 22 rim fire.
