I recently bought a Marlin 39A and I have had some bad problems with it. The first time I took it out and shot the thing it was hitting like a foot to the right at 25 yards. By the time I got it to hit bullseye the rear sight was practically hanging off the left side of the barrel and the front sight was off the right side. I brought the rifle back to the dealer and they sent it back to Marlin. Three months later I get the gun back with a repair order that said that they repalced the front sight assembly. I pulled the rifle out of the box and guess what, the sights are pretty much in the same place I put them when I sent it back to Marlin. Both of the sights are noticeably adjusted just as I described before, so now I'm sending it back again and asking for a new rifle or a refund. I can't believe that they would send something like this back to a customer. Keep in mind that this is not a cheap 22LR, they cost about 450 dollars. I have several other Marlins and I have never had any trouble with them. Has anyone out there had similar problems with a Marlin or their repair work?
Before you send it back again, try a couple different types of ammo. My 39A shoots CCI mini-mag and Remington yellow jackets well. Most other stuff either won't group or shoots high, low or wide. When I got mine, I was having similar problems, although not as bad. Took it back to the dealer and he gave me the advice.
I hate to say this, but since the dealer handled it, you do not know what transpired. If I were you, I would call Marlin and talk to them myself. They will likely give you a call number to ship it to them. This is not right and it is not ammo - not that far out. My bet is either the barrel is bent or the muzzle crown got buggered up.
I did contact Marlin and they told me to have the dealer ship it to them. I'm just hoping that they will make it right because this will be the last rifle I buy from them if they don't. I know that with any gun maker there can be a lemon in the bunch, but what gets me is that they have had it once already and sent it back with the same problem.
If you are determined never to experience anything like this again, then don't plan on buying another gun. Of any kind. I'm serious; that's just the way things are. All over. If you look around, every maker seems to turn out the occassional ugly baby, and most of them appear to want to take an "ignore it and it will eventually go away" fix it methodology. Be prepared to stick with it until the gun is right to your satisfaction.
if the threads in the front of the reciever are even just the slightest bit out of square to the centerline of the bore it'll do exactly what you are describing. in fact XS sights will exchange front sights if the one you purchase in the sight set is either too high or too low. it sounds like this is fairly common but to listen to them its more of a verticle issue...
When a gunsmith receives a gun, he will often record the sight settings so that when it is returned to the owner, the sights can be reset to where they were when it was brought in.
I finally got my 39A back this last week. Marlin put a new barrel on it and the thing shot great except for now it won't extract spent cases from the chamber ocassionally. I brought it to my gunsmith and he said it was probably the chamber because when they blue new barrels they do not plug it they dip the whole thing. He polished up the chamber and that did it. What a mess to go through but a least it's fixed now.
Same problems as Spiker SS.
I just purchased a 39a and it shoots wide right and high. Adjusted rear sight is extremely left and still can't hit a target at 30 feet. I am experimenting with different types of rounds before my shipping label shows up from Marlin. I was using Winchester SuperX.
I feel your pain man. I just purchased a brand new 39a. It shoots to the right just like yours. It is a serious problem because there is no sight adjustment on it. Apart from the in accuracy I have no complaints! Thats pretty major though.
