I put out corn to keep the local deer from eating my wife's flowers. My wife said there were two does, each with twin fawns, eating corn the other night. Sorry I missed it.

What a superb photograph! That's suitable for framing, in my eyes.

Last week I was up in Michigan working on food plots. One of the plots was planted with rye, chicory and clover last fall, to help deer make it through what turned out to be a very mild winter. The rye in this plot was up to my chin and we were getting ready to clip it so the chicory and clover would get more sun. Knowing that does like to hide their fawns in really tall stuff like this, we decided to walk it first, so the four of us fanned out and started working our way through this little 1/5 acre field.

Just as I started to feel a little silly, up pops this fawn that couldn't have been more than a few days old. It hopped, wobbled and generally frolicked his way out of the food plot and made a right turn into the pines. We finished walking the field and then decided to leave it standing another few weeks. We were putting in 2 other fields that would provide plenty of forage and I like the idea of the little guys having a safe place to take a nap.

264 WM,
That is a great photo.
Broom jm,
That was thoughtful of you to walk the field. We have unfortunately hit a fawn while mowing hay in the pastures and it is a very sad image. Thanks for taking the time to clear them out first. It is amazing how a fawn will hug the ground to hide rather than run from a tractor.

Nice find and nice pic. I have a couple of does hanging out in the south end of the pastue. Haven't seen any fawns yet, but have my camera ready if they do show up.

update on fawn sighting

I was traveling a rural road here in southern Indiana yesterday on my scooter and I saw a fawn that could not have been more than a week old. I slowed to a stop within 20 feet of it and it looked at me curiously. I stayed seated on the scooter and pushed it slowly forward towards the fawn with me feet and the little fawn wagged its tail and walked towards me. We were within five feet of each other and I just enjoyed looking at it. After a minute or so the fawn twitched its nose and ran off, I suppose my scent drifted to it in that time and instinct told it to run away. It was a pleasure. No, I did not have a camera with me!

Terry,

I had something fairly similar happen to me in CA one time, during a preseason scouting trip. I was walking along the edge of a clearing and spotted something moving. I froze and this little blacktail fawn walked toward me to within about 10 or 15 feet. I was even talking to it and it kept coming to me. It never really did run off...it was more like I kept going in the direction I was heading and the fawn angled up the hill and into some trees. I always wondered why it acted like that and hoped it hadn't lost it's mom or something.
