A very kind gentleman sent me two wild cats he has from the '06. 1-a 22/06 and the other a 243/06.now I have looked and looked and I keep on looking.I have a 243 but not a dog scalding 22 so I am leaning hard that way.the 40gr bullets I plan to shoot out of the 32"pacnor bbl with their super nice break should send them 4400-4500.I yi yi yi for the yotes this febuary.what do you guys think about this build???.......PD
On the 22/06, probably great fun for less than 500 rounds of barrel life (with decent accuracy), and you might have to test quite a few bullets to find one that will hold together for more than 20 yds out of the barrel. Not sure if Barnes makes a 22 cal solid copper bullet in 40 gr?
If set on that 22 caliber, and '06 case, I think you would want to take a look at the heavier 22 cal bullets for what you want to use it for.
We sure want to hear your results, whatever you decide on. Good luck.
I think Barnes has a 45gr TSX and maybe a Solid Banded in 45grs also but that's probably about all you'll find like that. Not sure if Hornady has the GMX in that size or Nosler's E-Tip either. You could still have blazing speed with the 243/06 using a monolithic in 80, 85, or 90 grains. Good luck
I am going to use the 40gr. South African GS Custom. Gerard Schultz has his 22/06 22x64 build and info on his project and already has over 1000rds. at 4700fps down the pipe with little to no loss in accuracy........
I would tend to shy away from the 22-06. My grandfather in-law has built quite a few of them and he was never happy with them. They built a crap load of 22-6mm's and found those to last longer and have better accuracy in general.
I just finished building myself a 243-06 and it's a great round. Here's a group I shot this past weekend testing loads. Bottom group is 5 shots, threw the 5th shot. Top two holes are my test shots when I was testing two different bullet weight drops.
There has always been interesting in wildcats like the 224 Clark,22x350mag and 22x284 but they always used 50gr bullets and heavier some with 1/8 twist barrels. I seen something about a 22WSM 5000fps.
