Dear group,

I'm looking into buying a Schofield Top-breaking revolver from www.navyarms.com.

I'm debating between either going for the model chambered for .45 Colt or the one for .44 Russian.

I know these are probabaly a very vague questions, but please indulge me if you can ... which ammuniton type is better overall? Which has more stopping power? Which is better when it comes to accuracy?

The intention for having this gun is one-part self-defense and, second, I just think they look pretty darn cool! :D

Thank you very much for your patience and help!

God bless,

I generally prefer a 44 cal but in this case the 45 Colt is the better round. The 44 Russian is ok but the 45 Colt has much more ammo types available. The 44 Russian is popular with some cowboys due to its low recoil and accuracy. Its hard to find in most gunshops. The 45 Colt can be found everywhere and good defense loads are put out by many makers. Shooting the topbreaks is fun and they do look cool.

Thank you very much Ironhead for your input! This does indeed clarify the difference for me.

Thank you again! I very much appreciate your help! :)

Ditto on what ironhead said. Anyone who owns a 44 Russian should look into reloading and stocking up on a large supply of 44 Russian brass. I believe they are available from Starline Brass. While the old designs make fun guns to shoot, if my life was on the line, I think I would prefer to have something more modern in my hand.
