Another nice hog

I have been closely watching a patch of chufas up at the club for the approximate "ready to be rooted" time. The hogs wont touch it until the underground nuts are at their biggest and sweetest. That time was several days away when I started seeing a few hog prints. No rootin',just sniffin' around to see when they would put it on their busy schedule to revisit the food pantry. They are like raccoons and a sweet corn patch. Deer will nip the tops of the chufas off and scratch at it but you can't mistake the sign when the hogs finally get to roto-tilling the plot. That time came so I scheduled a hunt for late one afternoon. I got up to the club at 1630 and started walking in to the stand overlooking the full length of the food plot. I climbed up into the tripod stand and got settled. I had my .50 Beowulf because of the good sized tracks that I had been seeing on one of the near dirt roads. Sunset was at 1815. At that time I flipped my lens caps off of the Leupold 2X7X33 Shotgun scope that I have mounted atop the "Wulf". This scope is excellent for this application because of it's fairly large objective for it's magnification. Plus it has the heavy crosshairs which makes them allot easier to see at times of very low light.(hog times) And parallex free at 75 yds. About 5-10 minutes after sunset I watched as a simi large black shape eased into the very far end of the chufas. I slowly raised my weapon and saw that it was a good size hog although not the "big boy". It stood their trying to figure if everything was ok to enter the plot. The hog eased farther into the plot and turned faceing full broadside to my position. I put the crosshairs just forward of the front sholder and a little low. I already had my trigger on set so I eased the safety off and let fly with a 300gr.,50cal., Gold Dot. The hog flipped over onto it's side, partially stood back up and flopped over. I loaded her in my P/U and headed home to the skinnin' poles. I put her on my scales and she weighted 145(ungutted) The bullet took two ribs going in,the top half of the heart was MIA,both lungs were mush, and the bullet splintered two more ribs coming out the far side. She stayed on ice for 4 days then my wife and I butchered her. As I write this I can look out of my computer room window and see the smoke billowing out of the smoaker. Inside is a rear leg quarter. It'll be ready in about another 3 hrs. Then, just another reason why we hunt, will be realized. STAY SAFE-------pruhdlr
