One of my neighbors has a couple hundred acres in Fredricksburg, Tx.
There are a lot of free ranging Axis on his place and yesterday, he shot one of these.
7mm mag at 150 yards
144 lbs field dressed.
These are great eating animals. Better than Whitetail and a lot like Elk.
I should be so lucky. The only free ranging exotics we have in North Louisiana are Emus, the large Austrailian birds. We had a bunch of Emu ranchers in this area and when the bottom fell out of the market they just turned them all loose. I have seen several while hunting but have not shot one. I just hate the thought of having to pluck the darn thing. Ducks and geese are bad enough but a 300 pound Emu has a lot of feathers.
I finally got my invite so I may go down there on Thursday for a 1/2 hunt. Just to say I killed an Axis. He said there were about 40 of them in the herd. Think I'll leave the .223 at home and take the 6.5x55. Ken if you can't be there, at least your cartridge will be there, right?
Yup - make'er a good one, Tom! That 6.5 and Axis deer are made for each other!
Almost got a black buck down in that country many years ago. They were free ranging, also. Spent most of one morning by myself sneaking, belly crawling and hiding to get up on a small group with the herd buck. Careful eyeballing proved he was just a couple inches short of the ranch minimum. Had to back crawl some distance to find adequate cover so's I could get up and leave without disturbing them. Sure had lots of cactus stickers to get rid of!
That sure is a beautiful hide on those axis deer. If I were to get one someday, I think I'd be inclined to have it tanned and put it on the wall. And if they taste like elk, mmmm! Good luck tpv.

Here's a picture of my friend, Bob Weimeyer, with a Sunday morning Pig. We were driving through the pasture looking for hogs when a group showed up. Bob shot the prettiest little pig I've seen in a while with a 7mm MAg.
Now don't you'll think that a little eye makeup and rouge would do that pig proud.
Anyway, he owns the Axis ranch that I haven't had time to go to, but maybe in two weeks.
Both the wifle and I are down with bad chest colds right now. Sounds like a croup ward around here. Been feeling lousy for a couple of weeks, so guess I've got a few more to go!
Yeah, that's a pretty piggie, alright! Weeds must be down a bit to able to see them. Last fall, they'd have to have been 5' at the backbone to see them! Mason was very disappointed in not seeing any to shoot.

Yep, its an air born virus that's going around. Its taking about a month to get over and that is not all the way back. My wife is in the middle of it now.
BTW, you must be feeling a little better, look how you spelled wife!!
You must have hunting on your mind.
Take care
I think it's a pretty pig Tom! And I know pigs...grew up raising them, with 700 or so at any one time, and several two-legged pigs, that weren't nearly as purty.
I feel for you that got that crud...I had it, and it is bad!
