more infoI have one with all of the sights. I find the Model 146 to be a little better than average accuracy wise – depending on the ammunition it is fed. It will generally out shoot all of the modern day average 22 rifles.
The only thing I know of that goes wrong with them is if they are shot a lot – and I mean a lot – they will wear the receiver where the bolt rides down when closing it. This will cause head space and the rifle will miss fire. This is easily repaired by an average gunsmith and a good home hobbyist can repair it also. The receiver is filed slightly along the rear bolt recess and a small piece of hard steel is trimmed to fit and silver soldered in place. The rifle is then ready for another lifetime of shooting.
The price seems high to me but I am not a judge of value for these rifles. For this price I would want the blue and wood to very nice and the three sights to be present. The front sight has a hood and several folding inserts. The middle or open sight also as ha a rotating plate to change the notches. The rear peep folds out of the way. Many of these rifles have either Mossberg of Weaver ¾” scopes and if clean they are fair scopes.
Make certain the spring loaded sling swivels are still with the gun as many are missing and they are hard to come by.
The rifle is a bit heavy but is an excellent trainer for young shooters. With shorts it is very quiet.
If you get this one keep your eyes open for a 155K to go along with it. The 155K is a clip feed and almost as nice a rifle.

I forgot to mention about the safety buttons. These are equipped with rd and green safety buttons. If they are missing andmany are as young shooters tend to pick at them with their finger nails, a replacement is available from Gun Parts Corp. but they are not as nice as the originals and the rifle should be discounted some if the button are not original. The originals are marked "S" and "F", the replacements are not.

What condition is it in? What sights does it have? Front, rear, peep, open, scope? What wood is is?

Here are the basic specs.

Takedown, 22 lr,l,s, tubular magazine holds 20(lr), 23(l), 30(s). 26" barrel. Weight 7 lbs. Plain stock with pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb and cheekpiece, knob for end tip, swivels. (146B) No. 1A ramp front sight, No. S107 rear sight, No. S130 receiver sight, Made 1949-1954
.

If you want it then buy it, but to me it is high unless it is 100% complete with all the sights, including the peep, and in very nice shape. But if it was something I truly wanted then I would still buy it.

Mossberg 146B-A

Hey, Ya'll New to the forum. Just purchased a Mossberg 146B-A. from a friend whom believe it or not hates old guns. Was given to him from some old widow in exchange for a little work. Anyway it,s here on my cleaning yoke and man it's in bad shape. The bore seems fine though and the stock other than a few nicks came out ok. the rifle was covered in sawdust. will try to clean it up so I can fired it at least. will take it down and have it parkerized. I threw my friend a hun for it. Hope I didn't get stroked too much. All the original sights are there and work fine. The green safe button behind the bolt is missing. I probably paid too much for it but I fell for it. What can I say? I like old 22's. My grandsons are getting into shooting and they'll appreciate it someday.

That's an interesting question.
Looking at the pictures the bolt bodies appear to be significantly different between models.
The 1956 Shooters Bible lists the same part number and price for the complete bolt for the Model 46B, 46B(a) and 46(b) which is for all purposes the same rifle and the Model 46M, 46M(a) and 46M(b). $3.50.
The Model 42 series (large series) all had the same bolt - R193.
The Model 146B bolt is listed as part number R584.
The Model 151K bolt is listed as - R406.

One of the tell tale aspects appears to be the firing pin as between differing series the firing pins are quite a bit different.

The Model 146B had a different Mainspring cap - end of the bolt - from the Model 151K which named this part theBreech plug.

The Mossberg 146 is a fine low cost .22. Great for starting out young shooters IF the stock fits them.
If all the sights are present you have a post, bead and aperture front sight. An open sight with round notch, square notch and vee notch open sight. A reasonable reciever sight and grooved for a scope mount.

The stock is a bit heavy and slightly bulky but is shootable as is. The trigger is reasonable. The barrel length is long enough for good off hand balance.

Both the 146 and the 151 deserve a look. You might find a whole rifle missing the sights at less cost than a bolt.
