In our state, you can hunt hogs any time there is a hunting season open. The way I read it though, is that you have to hunt with same weapon you would hunt said game.

So, deer season is almost gone and we are thinking of hunting hogs with 22....head shots.

1st- is this do-able?
2nf- what is the hardest hitting .22LR bullet?

I've shot a bunch of pigs in traps with .22 rimfires. It works great with one round right between the eyes or behind the ear, then a second for insurance.

Would rather not depend on that to hunt them with though. If forced to, would step up to a .22 mag and some sort of fairly solid bullet.

Good luck......

As a kid growing up, I had the task of turning a large boar hog into bacon, and my great grandfather handed me a H&R break top revolver in .32 S&W to do the job. One lousy shot later, and I had a real problem on my hands, and the next four shots only made matters worse. I resolved the issue with his .38-55, but I never wanted to repeat the event.

I'd hate to have to rely on a .22LR, on some of the hogs I see in pictures. Maybe one of the three little pigs, but one of those pony size monsters, not me.

You may start by reading your states Fihs and Game laws. You may find the using a rimfire for hogs is illegal. Most states have some sort of minum requirement for hunting things bigger than small game.If you can get within a few feet of the hog and shoot it in the head in the right spot it will work but I would recomend against it.

22RF can kill farm hogs with one perfect shot. I've watched a 5003 horse get put down with a 22rf in the temple.

But feral hog hunting in the wild will never give you that one perfect shot.

I think just about ever feral hog I've shot and butchered had at least one 22 Rf bullet (well mushroomed) just under the hide. they just don't work and I seriously doubt the hog even knows it has been shot!

Not doable....use a shotgun with slugs.

I have hunted feral hog with 357 and 44 magnum pistols with 7.5" barrels when I was younger and near places of refuge such as trees or near by trucks in case you miss and piss one off.......I have used 30 30 and up in rifle caliber with success and also shot guns with 00 buck........I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a month old piglet with a 22 lr, but nothing bigger.......You piss off a 300 lb or bigger hog with a badly placed 22, your a** better have wings.

Yeah, a 22 LR can kill one, but that does not make hunting wild hogs with a 22 LR the most responsible thing to do. If you have something bigger, use it, and you'll be much less likely to have to chase a wounded hog for miles into the brush.
