Fishy cooler? Stinky sneakers?

Ever have a cooler that reeked of fish and you couldn't get the stench out? How about stinky sneakers?
My Dad taught me this trick: dump a sack of briquets into the cooler. Put a few briquets inside the sneakers. That charcoal really soaks up the stink!
Later, you can use the briquets for barbecuing. By the time the briquets are ready for grilling meat, any absorbed stink is burned off.

Um ... ya don't set them on fire BEFORE ya dump them in ... just dump them straight out of the bag.
But for youuuuuuuu, Bigoot, and those big-foot stinky sneakers of yers ... mebbe ya should let them burn all night ... after obtaining a permit from the EPA for a toxic waste dump ... :)

Thanks for the tips. Might try it on a cooler some day, although I try to keep them clean by rinsing them out with bleach/water after use.

Sneakers - dogs enjoy chewing up my old ones too much for me to take that away from them :) Tops get eaten off, then they play tug-of-war with the soles.

Labra-disposal retriever - is that breed recognized by the AKC yet?

Another recipie that works wonders for stinky things
like fishy coolers (or hands) and skunked dogs is to use a paste
made from baking or washing soda wetted with store
bought hydrogen peroxide.

Use this after a cleaning with laundry detergent to get the easy greasy stuff off.

The soda raises the pH and makes the peroxide work much more effectively.
The stinky molecules typically contain a nitrogen or sulfur part
that gets oxidized into a form that soap can easily wash away.

For skunked dogs use the baking soda as the washing soda is
hard on them. Be very careful around the eyes, ears, and mouth.
Also be aware that it will bleach the fur of the dog to some degreee.
(my lab looked a hundred years old after getting de-skunked)

Would also work well with white tennis shoes,
but you will end up with dull colors with any other shoes.

Cheers!

Don't forget a healthy sprinkle of Borax. It kills odor eating bacteria, but is supposed to be fairly safe to handle. I don't sprinkle it on my cornflakes, but I think it's much less hazardous than a lot of chemicals we use without thinking (bleach, bore cleaner, windshield washer fluid, etc). Borax is awesome for stinky shoes, never thought about it for coolers till now. It also works great for insect control, it's very rough on ants, roaches, and spiders.

Skinned a lot of foxes and big tom cats back in the eighty's, I just used lemon or lime leaves, wash hands with soap and water crush leaves in hands and rub all over, good in sleeping bags and boots, vinegar is good for removing that fish smell from cooler boxes.
