Iron sights.

I thought about putting in the muzzle loading section, but since it's in reference to my Remington 700ML the same question would apply to the centerfire owners since the sights are exactly the same..

Like I said I have a 700ML .54. I do not have, nor want a scope on it. I didn't like the Remington rear sight so I replaced it with a Williams receiver mounted peep sight. I love the sight except for one minor or should I say major issue. It doesn't go up high enough so all of my shots are zeroed at 50 yards. Obviously I would prefer to be zeroed at 100 or 150 yards. I had thought about shimming the peep sight to raise it, but I could never find a "cheap" way of doing it that looked decent. So I just dealt with it for a long time. Or more like I didn't use it that much.

This morning I just happen to see front sights in Midway from Williams (I bought the peep sight long before I knew of Midway.) They have them in a variety of heights. Does anyone have any experience with changing the heights of the front sight? I seems to me that it would work. But I would hate to spend money on something that barely raises the point of impact.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

GM some years ago, I had an older fellow tell me about filing down the front sight. He helped me do this way back in the late 50's. However, I suggest also, that you leave the front sight alone and get with Midway to see if you can't get the proper new rear sight which will take care of your problem sighting.

I disagree wholeheartedly with the previous two posters, and I'll tell ya why.

Rear peep sights are designed to help you keep a nice cheek weld to your stock, improving accuracy and reducing felt recoil. If your peep lines up well with your eye when you mount the gun, the last thing you want to do is raise the height of it. Furthermore, replacing a front dovetail with a shorter or taller blade is relatively easy and will result in being able to employ the adjustments built into your existing peep.

I have a Model '92 with the above problems and a taller front blade resolved POI issues. The new sight allows for point of aim shooting at 100 yards and a six o'clock hold, at 50 and under.

Try this -- go to the Williams Gun Sight Co. website, and download the PDF catalog. They provide sight height choice instructions on page 18.

If you are hitting low at 100 yards then try getting a lower front sight. It should only be about $10 or so. The front sight on Remington's are usually just dovetailed into the ramp. Easy to change.

Also, being a muzzleloader, you could change bullet weights and powder charges to see if the point of impact changes.

I think I will get the new front sight. For starters it's considerable cheaper than getting a higher rear sight. Secondly, it's a hunting firearm, I don't need stuff "hanging" off of it to catch on brush and grass.

Now I just have to get to my parents house this week, where I keep it, and measure the front sight.

And in case anyone is wondering, I'm not using a file to my firearms.

Thanks.

I tried to do that, but it come up as gibberish. Everything in the catalog is clean and clear except for those numbers I need.

They're all low.

I really like the TruGlo #TG958G Ghost Ring with Front Globe. I have it on my Buckstalker and they are aluminum, not plastic like the ones coming with lots of muzzle loaders. These center perfectly and quickly on target and have nice fine dots. I like them better than the Williams I have on my Hawken. See this link, then pull the drop down box to check out the 3 different models. The TFO's look really cool, but they are about 2x more, but require no light. I think these are going to go on my Hawken. 8)

I put a Williams 5D on a 336 marlin in 30 WCF. I had to change the front sight height like your situation...got the front sight at Brownells....love it now...and I removed the apeature from the rear sight so i can see in the late afternoon.
