Any one have any suggestions on areas in Clark Co. WA, GMU 564 where an old man might have a chance at a deer? I'm not famiiar with the area, except for maps. Thanks.

Clark county is getting a little poplulated. If you travel north of there to the Woodland bottoms and up the Lewis river you will find quite a few deer. A little further-- north and west of Longview in the Ryderwood unit you will find a good number of the critters too. Most of the timber companies will have there roads open through deer season-- except where there is active logging operations.

Okay, if you are really unfamiliar with the area here is a really good bet. Pick up a good map of the area. Bob's Sporting goods in Longview will have them. They are on commerece street. Drive to the town of Ryderwood. It is at the end of a state highway. From Ryderwood, take any logging road. Just before you enter the town there is a mainline that turns left. I Can't remember the road number offhand but it is an obvious main logging road. From that point on you are in good deer country that goes for miles. There are also lots of elk in the area. Unfortunately the seasons do not go together. If you want to talk about it more email me or PM me you phone number and I will be glad to talk about the area with you.

The good news is that there's a bunch of deer in that unit and there's usually a late, muzzleloader/shotgun/pistol season for any deer. In the past it's gone to the end of December, but this year it ended in mid December. The other good news is that this long season allows you lots of weekends to hunt.

The bad news has been mentioned...too many people, and this year the unit was decreased in size.

I've come to the conclusion that the best way to get your deer in this unit (unless you go north or come in by river) is to hunt private land. There's plenty of 5, 10 & 20 acre homesites that are plagued by the garden destroying critters. Ask around and you may find someone to let you shotgun hunt on their land.

That's what I'm trying next year.
