It's great to see this thread pop up again, just in time for grouse season. I never did go when I started this thread or since. Maybe this year I will get off my lazy back side and do it. Of course I need to get out and get some coho too. I don't have the single six any more but have a 6" S&W 617 with and SDM front and a Millett rear sight. It has the 10 shot cylinder and is more accurate than the Single Six was. I think I will take a day off work when it cools down some and rains and give it a try. This time I will do it and with any luck report back with a success story and some pictures.

Don't laugh but I have shot many grouse in the state of Maine with a scoped Ruger Mk 11. It is perfectly legal and to me a greater challenge than to use a 12 guage which is most commonly used.

My favorite tactic is to drive the paper company roads very slowly and watch for them at a distance if they are out and about. When spotted you stop the vehicle, get out and load your handgun. Do a stalk within range and see if you can add to the stew pot so to speak.

You should read the synopsis, yes it is legal to use rimfire for forest grouse.
I have taken several grouse with 22's but I consider them "meat in the freezer" so I hit them fast and hard with the shotgun, I was using my 12 gauge O/U but since the birds are often in groups more than two I switched over to an 870 youth 20 gauge, it's half as long as the O/U so its not as much of a hassle in the brush and being able to get that third shot in makes getting your limit in about half the time.
I'm slacking this year, only been out one day, did get my limit of Ruff's, didn't see any Blue's, was raining like an SOBEACH!
Last year I brought home 27! I need to get with the program if I'm going to try to do that well this year!

yeah, im only brushed up on my big game regulations. 27 grouse is pretty impressive, a lot of good meals, i dont expect i will ever kill that many in one season, would be nice though.
i be happy if i get 3-4
