British Columbia Game Populations
I had been away from this province for around 25 years due to work. I returned several years ago and took up hunting here again.
I gotta tell you man is there a lot of game here now.
I hunted all over the province until I left and filling tags was work then. The Fish and Game branch seems to have gotten smarter in those years I was gone. They did away with the liberal and lengthy both sex openings started in the '60's. My wife and I saw upwards of 50 deer every day, various sizes of elk (if in the area), many bear, lots of sheep, and even goats, which I haven't seen since I was a kid. I had seen very few moose along the south when I was young, but there are a lot of them now.
For the first time in 40 YEARS I ran into a CO. I couldn't believe it.
One field we drove by on the main highway had over 20 mule deer (all does) in it. I have never seen that before during any past hunting season. We observed the pre rut wherein 2 and 3 point bucks were trying to get some but the does weren't interested in little boys, and this was all over the place, not isolated, and from the road that you could drive a car on.
Finally something was being done right here. I sure hope the BC Government keeps it up.
All this was in Southern BC. I didn't go much more that 100 miles from the boarder at any time. Is this happening all over the province????
I saw more geese and ducks than ever as well. Populations of quail, in the areas that support them are way up too. The only thing I notice were that grouse were down, but that could be a low cycle.
There may be a fewmore bears than I like, though. I keep hearing of people fishing loosing thier catches to both black bears and Grizzlies. I have seen more Grizzlies than I have ever seen in my life, a lot more.
