Black bear opened this week here in wa (north cascades GMUs) and I went back to check in on the bears I encountered on memorial day. Much to my shegrins when I got to the gate there were so many cars there I had trouble finding a place to park. I figured the crouds probably chased them out of there any way. So I worked down stream instead of up and saw scads of elk and deer tracks but very little bear sign and no bears. Worked the other side of the river away from the crouds and found a little more sign but still nothing like earlier in the year where you would bump into a bear at every bend in the road. Two kids on bikes pointed me towards a pile of what they thought was fresh bear scat. I think from the size it was more likey racoon.

On a side note what parent let's a 12 year old kid ride a bike with a unsheethed 12 inch knife in his belt. Even a minor fall would have probably seriously injurred this kid. told him he ought to carry that in a safer way but I don't think it sank in.
