5.56 vs .223? I thought they were the same

Please forgive my ignorance. What is the difference between .223 cal and 5.56mm rounds and are the two interchangable in a typical AR-15 (Colts and clones)?

Nevermind. After I posted this, it came up with several related threads and websites that answered my questions.

Now I just have to wait until I get home to look at my Bushmaster XM15-ES2 to see what it says on the rifle and/or receiver, .223 or 5.56

Mike,

FWIW, there is very little difference, but it is important. There is no safety issue in shooting commercial .223 ammunition ia a military 5.56mm chamber. The problem comes from shooting military 5.56 mm ammunition in commercial .223 chambers. Due mostly to throating differences pressure can be quite an issue in some guns.

Same deal exists for .308 as well...just in case it comes up.

My Bushy is stamped "CAL.223-5.56MM", and Bushmaster specifically states that the chamber is designed to fire either cartridge safely.
