Best OGW/Recoil Caliber

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Hey Folks -

During a fit of boredom, I was curious to see if one caliber-cartridge class vs. another had inherhently better or worse optimal game weight potential per recoil. I looked at about 90 cartridges. I have to say that for a lot of the big bore stuff (i.e. 577 Tyrranosaur) I did not have the reloading data handy, which would have added another 15 or so to the list. I needed to know the reloading data so that I could enter the appropriate amount of powder into the recoil calculator.

Knowing the cartridge, caliber, bullet weight, powder charge, MV, recoil, and 300 yd velocity, I wanted to see what the 300 yd OGW/Recoil was for each of the 90 cartridges I had the data handy for. I sorted them by OGW/Recoil and then numbered (ranked) them 1-90 with 1 being the best OGW/ft-lb of recoil and 90 being the worse. The average number (or rank) for the calibers were:

17.7 0.338
26.6 0.284
31.3 0.277
39.9 0.308
41.8 0.375
47.3 0.416
50.0 0.243
52.3 0.257
70.0 0.458
71.4 0.358
73.6 0.223
79.0 0.400

They differ wildly of course on the OGW values, and some will have much flatter trajectories than others, but if one knew what the game weight was at 300 yd (you could do the same calulations for 100, 200, etc) that one needed to take, I was curious what cartridge could do it for the least amount of recoil. But for those of you that are, start at the bottom of the list below and have fun!

For those itching to tell me I have too much time on my hands save your ATP: I was able to quickly import most of the raw bullet weight and velocity data into excel from various sources. Then it's easy to just set up the macros and come up with the data in an instant. The tedious part was looking up the approximate powder charges that took about 30 minutes. Other than that it was pretty simple to do. Recoil data is modeling an 8# rifle. WM is Weatherby Mag, I think the rest is self explanatory. Some of these cartirdges are clearly not meant for game (or game you have to worry having anough energy for), but I included them anyways. We all do different things to fall asleep; nothing gives me a better night's rest than ballistics calculations and chatting with the Lord.

Ok... It did not not look like that when I posted...

It's OGW at 300 yd, then the recoil, then the OWG/recoil.

Sorry about the ugly format.
