fire lapping with J&B

I am planning to fire lap a 22-250 using J&B and the methods I have read about on this and other forums. The barrel seems to be in good shape but after 5 to 10 rounds from a clean barrel it is the very devil to get the copper out it. I can see even small chunks of it in the muzzle. It takes alot of work to clean it of the copper and I am hoping to smooth the thing out a little. If any of you have tried this I would like to hear of your experiences with it. I am planning to use the method by which you use a patch to coat the barrel with a thin coat and then fire the reduced charge. I am hoping that way to keep the J&B largely out of the throat when lapping. Let me know your ideas and how it worked for you.......
Thanks.........Catch:confused:

Danger !

 J-B is too close to a liquid and will not adhere to the bullet ! I'm thinking it will offer nothing more than a barrel obstruction . Probably won't make your gun blow up , just ruin the barrel by bulging it . If you do in fact do this please post your results . If J-B is suitable for bore lapping I'm pretty sure the manufacturer would use that fact as a selling point !

I don't see how the JB would be aggressive enough to do any good as a lapping compound on a bullet, to be honest. But hey if someone can tell me how to try it I'd give it a go. Maybe freeze the stuff and put it in the grease grooves of cast bullets? I don't know.

Bore paste may help you get that last bit of polish on a newly-lapped barrel though.

I had a Ruger M77 V in 220 Swift years ago. Liked 52gr. Nosler match bullets. The faster the better it shot. After 10 rounds acc. Would drop off. Used Copper out for every cleaning. The quick fouling didn't matter because I only used it for chucks and crows so I had plenty of time to clean. In P. Dog town it would have been a pain.

I was having a **** of a time with my new Savage FLP 25/06 copper fouling. It would take forever to get it clean.I spent several shooting cycles breaking in the barrel, and still this thing was a copper mine after each session.
I finally just handlapped the barrel with lapping compound on a cotton mop a couple times, and the last time i used a rubbing compound for cars.It is doing good now.

I shot it last week, all day, testing ammo and it didn't have much copper in it at all. You might try what I did. I was going to buy the Tubb's final finish bullets and load them up,but I've read that they will really take the life out of your barrel.
