Sportsman 700?

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Me and my best friend were shopping around for a deer/target rifle as he has been bitten by the gun-bug. He has a kid in college and one just out so he is on a budget to say the least. He trusts my reccommendation as to caliber, rifle etc and wants one to hunt deer as well as target shoot. I told him a .243/6mm would be a good start and we found what I feel was a real deal. It is a Model 700 Remington with a matte finish bolt/barrel/receiver and sporter barrel. It has a birch wood stock as the old 788's and 78 Sportsman model but is in fact stamped 700? I cannot find this rifle in the Blue-book or other sources. It is a real gem of hunting rigs with leupold mounts and rings, sling and a cheap 4.5x14 scope that will suffice till deer season if he decides to replace it. Does anyone know anything about these rifles? Did Remington make a 700 Sportsman? It appears to be as it left factory. Oh yes the bolt is not jewelled but blued and it is an ADL stock but as stated made of birch and walnut stained.

Here is the model 78- Sportsman

You can get on some of the sites like GUNSAMERICA/GUNBROKER and you might find a model 78

I have several years of Remington catalogs, dating to the early 80's, and it's not in them, but I don't have every year either.

It could be an aftermarket swap out ? Or someone dropped a M700 synthetic action, in a sportsman stock. Some of those were heavy, or limp.

In any case, if the bore looks decent, the birch stock won't be a limiting factor.

Maybe you have an ADL that has had the Stock replaced with a 78 Sportsman Stock ! Does it have a standard length of pull ( 13 5/8 " + - ) if not someone might have made a youth model out of it , and didn't want to cut the original Stock !

Remington model 78-sportman were all Gloss and the bolt wasn't jewelled and had a different bolt handle than the standard 700 it's pretty close to what they used on the Rem 721 except that the knob is smaller and it's plain like the 721.

As kdub pointed out you may have a ADL and Numrich gets alot of factory Rem wood stocks http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/...px?catid=11940

My custom 270 I used a Rem 78 action and I had it changed out to a BDL in a McMillan stock.

Some of the Matte Finish Rem 700 bolt weren't jewelled but they were matte finish.

I have seen the rifle you are talking about. It is a Remington 700 Sportsman. As far as I can tell it is only sold at Sportsman's Wearhouse.

I saw this gun at bass pro shop a couple of months ago and was wondering the same thing. The one I looked at had a matte finish on it like the sps does but it had a birch stock. If I remember right it was only around $500 and it was brand new (they had a whole rack of them in standard calibers.) It seemed pretty decent to me.
