Does anyone have any experience with Zastava rifles from Serbia? Apparently the old Remington 788 Mauser's were made by Zastava. A lot of retailers here in Canada seem to be offering Zastava rifles (mostly rimfire, but not exclusively). I'm wondering if the quality is anywhere near that of CZ?

I think that was/is the Remington M798, recently imported. From articles I've read, I'd not hesistate to purchase one myself and have been considering getting one as a donor rifle for a custom job. For the record, I also own two CZ 550s and would still welcome a Zastava M98 clone.

Perhaps this article will shed some light:

I had an Interarms Mark X rifle that had Zastava stamped on the receiver under the stock line. Worked great and I couldn't see any problems with it.

yes several years ago Charles Daly lost the right to sole importer of the firearms to none other than Remington. Remington imported barreled actions only and had the stocks done here and sold as the Rem 788 & 798 models, where as CD had the whole rifle imported under their CD name. i'm always on the look out for one of the CD small ring series in .223 or .22 Hornet. would make for a dandy carry rifle.

EAA is the current US Importer but as others have said, Interarms, Charles Daly, Parker Hale and Remington have all imported the Zastava rifles in one form or another.

I have one of the Charles Daly actions that I built into a custom .358 Norma. While they are perhaps a bit "rough" right out of the box, though totally functional, they are perfect candidates for custom rifles because any good smith can make an incredible shooter out of one without much effort.

They are one of the best bargains in the rifle world hands down IMO.

Hello:
Old post I know.
But I cant find a usa importer for the zastava M85 -161 22 hornet rifle that has parts for it.
Anyone know of a usa or non usa importer I can order parts for the zastava M85 22 Hornet rifle.
Want firing pin/fire pin spring/22 hornet extractor/22 hornet extractor ring holder / and a couple of 22 hornet clip magazines.
I have sent and email to an Australian importer but no reply as of 2 days.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello:
Got a reply from J&G and they sell the rifles but no parts.
Remington supplies no parts for the 799 which would fit the M85 .
FIME Group sells the rifles but they dont supply parts but recomended K-VAR which suposably does parts but i have already contacted them and it was also sell the gun but no parts.
Numerich Arms well no help there either.
Beretta of australia is a zastava dist and contacted them but no reply.
Century Arms you qeussed it sell rifle no parts.
K-Var as already mentioned no parts.
Charles Daly no luck with M85 parts but had rifles to sell.
Century Arms was a dead end on parts too.
EAA Corp had rifles to sell but no parts.
I even emailed zastava in serbia at impex@zastava-arms.rs and the did reply but with they cant send me parts directly so go through a usa dealer for parts ect BUT I CANT FIND A DEALER DISTRIBUTOR THAT CARRIES PARTS FOR THE RIFLES THEY ARE SELLING.
Even Remington didnt carry parts for there rem 799 which was a serbia zastava gun.
Doesnt appear to be a usa dealer distributor carrying parts or willing to get parts so i tried a couple off shore sellers and as of yet no luck.
I have been searching for the parts for almost 2 years now and not found any of them.
What im looking for is the parts for a zastava M85 -161 bolt action rifle or remington model 799 or charles daly even had the gun .
These parts are for a 22 hornet caliber .
Im lookin for a firing pin / fire pin spring / 22 hornet ejector / ejectors holding ring / and a couple extra 22 hornet clip magazines.
Many come forward with info that i have already checked on but ocasionly another one i havent checked shows up so hey yeah please throw any and all info at me .
Even the old others gave me is apreciated because some where sometime im gonna hit the jackpot.
Anybody know of a usa or even another country distributor i can email please throw it at me.
I keep hearing others says they have places to get the parts but even there info on parts suppliers came up empty so far.
Did have a fellow tell me that he COULDNT find parts for his zastava m85 in 7.62x39 rifle but did find info that the sako vixen older rifles extractor number 5 fit with minor filing and worked perfectly.
This extractor will fit the rem 799 or zastava m85 for the 7.62x39 extractor and he got the part from westerngunparts.com or call 1-780-489-5711 ask for Irv i was informed.
I did call talked to Irv and yes he could get the extractor #5 for a xastava m85 or rem 799 in 7.62x39 and ordered it from sako older rifle vixen but no other parts to be found so i hit a dead end again.
But you individuals needing an extractor for the 7.62x39 rifles are in luck as another parts with minor filing fits and its an easy fit.
But again im begging for info for my 22 hornet as for parts so PLEASE yell at me :)

Thanx a milion

I feel your pain on the parts availability issue. M85 magazines are virtually unobtainable, as Century has the exclusive distribution rights for Zastava rifles but has no interest in selling parts or magazines to support them.

In terms of quality, the barreled actions are superb, while the stocks are a bit unfinished, but have great potential if you apply an oil finish like Tru-oil over the top of the original finish and finish cutting the checkering.

Hello:
Did send another email to zastava of serbia yesterday and did recieve a reply and they said century is applying for export rights on parts later this year.
Well i also emailed zastava of serbia a year back and was told century would be carrying the parts but its a yr later and still no parts .
Called Century Arms yesterday about it and nope no parts Called later in the year which is what i was told over a year ago too.
So i dont know if parts are or not coming to century but its looking like probably not.
Did contact aprox a dozen other emails through computer asking about parts and so far today no parts but did get one to reply asking where i was located so maybe he has parts but the email contact looked foreign so im worried when he reads the reply as im in the united states of america that i may see that dead end again for parts.
I emailed zastava at impex@zastava-arms.rs and the reply came back from email address
zastava_razvoj@yahoo.com
the reply read exactly as below.

Hello Mr Eric
Models Remington 799 and i M85 are same rifles.
Our partner in USA,Century, will have parts soon, while we get export licenses.
Best regards

I was pmd a possible contact to check into and its a off shore company but might just might get me closer to parts time will see.
If it does ill glady post info if supplier doesnt mind.
The fellow might just as a favor go the extra mile to get me parts just as a courtesy and the freindly crap i threw at him = In otherwords we hit it off in laughs and giggles .
So ill see what happens.
I did as mentioned earlier also contact another 12 or more off shore companies not in the usa and at this moment just next day 6 responded with 5 no parts available but one asked where i was located and thats the above read im refering to hope not dead end.
but have aprox 6 or so to hear from and another id say is going to be a no reply from barretta australia which computer searched shows as a zastava dealer.
Im trying my darndest and some where im going to find parts or some of them anyway.

So AGAIN IF ANY INFO YOU HAVE EVEN IF I ALREADY CHECKED IT OUT ( YOU WOULDNT KNOW ALL IVE CHECKED BUT ITS A BUNCH ) IS APRECIATED .
Send the possible leads my way used good parts are welcome here too ! :)

Head Shot,

Only suggestion I have is have you tried calling Brownells or Midway USA? I have two Zastava rifles. Oldest is a M48 BO 7.92mm built in the 50s' (no crest/manufactuers info, only SN) service rifle (k98 verison with intermediate length action) and a Harrison & Richardson 340 in .308. The H&R was imported from Zastava with a walnut stock back in the early 80s. Nice bluing and adjustable trigger. I swapped out the stock long ago for a syntheic one and has killed many a whitetailed deer.

Hello
No cant say that i contacted Brownells or MidWay.
They did strike me as a place for M85 zastava parts but hey im game .
Just a call away to find out.
I have contacted Numerich Arms and APEX guns which buy old guns and sell them as parted out pc by pc and no parts as in fire pin / fire pin spring/extractors /or ring holder for the extractor but Numerich did show parts and im with the impression it was a zastava M85 .223 cal
But many parts were interchangeable so if you needed another part you might find it at Numerich Arms Gun Parts .

Update called Brownells and Midway both.
Brownells no parts Midway said they had a stock and trigger group available as parts otherwise no extractors or fire pins or clip mags ect.

Head Shot, I don't know if this will help, but certainly won't hurt to call. Academy Sports sells the Zastava M70 Rifles in the stores around Dallas, they certainly have to be sending these somewhere for warranty work and whatever else they might need. Maybe they can give you some info on who is doing their warranty work, as they would have parts or can tell you where they get their parts for the Zastava brand rifles, hopefully. Just an idea, good luck to ya !

Hello:
Thank you Fred243 ill sure give it a try- never know might be my answer.
I did email Zastava serbia again and this time asked more qestions ect.
Got the reply below from them.

I also called century again and pursued it further and from the discusion it sounds like that century has done the papers for import and sounds like they have been approved for import of parts but zastavas papers have not been approved to export parts to the USA.

So that would explain why century has told me three times about a yr ago and then about 6 months ago and now just recently to check back in 6 months on parts.
This process may have been going on that long from my thinking.
If its been that long and the other companies have had no parts as well then just figuring that remington carried the zastava m85 as there remington 799 back in 2006 and they had no parts then just from that date to this time has been close to almost 8 years.
And Charles Daly had the zasatava M85 at one time and now Century arms does so if you add there years in with no parts im betting its been 15 years or more the zastava m85 has been imported with no one having parts.

Its been tough finding parts as i have personaly looked for right at 2 years now and even contacted the other gun companies that had the zastava including remington and gone as far as to contact off shore zastava dealers and have had no luck so far .

I did get responses from off shore that it sounded like they had parts but once the USA address came up then it was a dead end.

Its looking like wait n see if century does get the parts or its going to be used parts if you can find them.

I do know that the extractor for the 7.62 x 39 in the zastava m85 or rem799 model can be found for repair if you order the sako vixen (Older model vixen) extractor #5 as i read on the internet fits perfectly with minor hand fit filing.

Otherwise parts for the Zastava M85 22 Hornet seem to be non existent .

But again thank you fred243 for the lead and i will ask about warranty repair as another angle on parts but think i ran into that over a year ago and it was send it back to us but problem for me was i didnt buy it from them and it wasnt warranty so sorta let it go at that then.

Head Shot:)

Update : Did call Academy sports at 1-888-922-2336 and the gal on the phone was not really aware of the parts issues for the zastava and did give me century arms info to contact .
I informed her that i had already contacted them and zastava along with other contacts and she went out of her way to find info.
She called the stores asking the employees and said many of them knew already the no parts situation.
But what surprised me was she got a number of a gun smith in the business for over 20 years and that he was on vacation but back next week and that he had helped the store with some zastava repairs but on the m70 zastava models which she listed as 243 / 270 / 308 ect.
She did say she was aware i was talking about the M85 line and a smaller cal per the info she got from the other store employees but that the recomendation was to call the gun smith at the number she gave me.
I will call him and if any pertenant info pops up for any zastava parts or repair ill post back the info.
AGAIN THANK YOU FRED243 FOR THE LEAD IT MIGHT GET ME CLOSER

Hello Fred243
Yes i did contact IZH Impex Inc of canada and also a Baikal company that i think was canada also but while no parts for a zastava M85 one did have (impex) zastava MP161 parts which was a 22 long rifle cal and not a 22 hornet parts im looking for.
However i did see the ausratia baretta that i contacted but got no reply from along with other zastava dealers in several other countries i wasnt aware of that email contacts are provide from your link provided so i have aeveral more to try for parts.
Thank you ill be investigating them as options.
I have contacted both USA zastava dealers on the list you gave so no new leads there but several that i hadnt seen.
I see the ukraine even has a zastava dealer but with the issuse of country in war id think itll be a just cross it off the list as an option.
Many of these countries im betting i couldnt even get a response ect due to there locations such as Nambia South Africa .
But at least i have what appears to be a possible list of all zastava dealers worldwide now.

Headshot,
I'm in Australia and If you like I can call our distributor for Zastava for you and ask about the Hornet parts. However, I have not seen one of these rifles sold here in that calibre only down to 223. Let me know by PM if I can help won't cost me anything to try. By the way, as others have said, these are good rifles at a good price. the finish is a little on the rough side but they work well and shoot accurately.
