Mauser 8x57

A friend or mine found an old mauser rifle in the river several years ago when the water was low. He cleaned it up a little and sprayed some rust preventive stuff in the action and barrel. There was one round chambered in it when he found it. Upon reporting it to the Sheriff, it was not a stolen weapon that someone threw away. Don't know the country of its origin, it is 8x57 caliber. Rifle is missing last section of wood near end of barrel. All serial numbers match on the bolt, reciever, and barrel. He said the bore cleaned up good. I've been interested in this rifle for a while since I own a Spanish 7x57 Mauser that I hunt with off and own. Anyone have a clue as to what value the 8x57 is worth? My friend has mentioned getting rid of it and I'm interested in making an offer.

Probably not a whole lot considering the storage conditions

There are a jillion mauser variants, some worth a lot, some worth very little. See if you can deciper any of the markings on the receiver or barrel and let us know.
