Single Six 22LR / 22WMR questions

I am looking at the Single Six Hunter model with convertible cylinders. Anybody have any opinions of this specific gun? Anyone have optics mounted? Any pictures?? How accurate is each cylinder? Would the 22LR damage the rifling, since it is .002" smaller in dia. than the 22WMR?

or do they also come with extra barrels as well as cylinders? i can see how a 17hmr / 17mach2 would work sonce they are the exact same bullet dia., but how can it work with 22LR - .222" and 22WMR - .224"???

I have a single six with the 22WMR, it is very accurate. Don't have the 22LR cyclinder so can't give you an accurate comparson. None of the convertables I know of use different barrels.

22 LR/22 Magnum comparisons

I have used a Ruger Single Six 22 LR/ 22 Magnum since 1973 and both cartridges shoot equally well, with the 22 Magnum being able to hit rabbits out to 80 yards or so. A low powered pistol scope can be a real winner on a Single Six, especially in 22 Magnum!

I have a 1974 stainless Single Six convertible with the 2 cylinders, and Mom has Grandpa's 1976 stainless convertible Single Six. You don't switch barrels, and I've never seen anything to suggest a problem from firing the lr through the guns. They're great!

Switching barrels on a single action revolver requires some special tools and expertise that most of us just don't have. I know "amateurs" do it all the time, but they have bought the tools and learned the techniques to do it right. And as far as I know, nobody does it very often on a given gun; it isn't like switching barrels on a Contender or a Dan Wesson revolver.

I've had a number of Single Six convertibles and a Colt New Frontier. They all shoot very well with both cartridges. The only one where the .22 WRM shot better than the .22 LR cylinder is a Bisley that I retrofitted a magnum cylinder to (the original Ruger Bisley Single Six came with only the LR cylinder). I found a new .22 WRM cylinder and "fitted" it to the Biz. Actually it just dropped right in! And with its preferred ammo, it shoots slightly more accurately than the .22 LR cylinder with its favorite fodder.

I heartily recommend Single Sixes, and the .22 WRM cylinder takes them into the realm of serious hunting and last ditch self defense guns.

I have a Single Six, and a Bisley Hunter in .44. The scope mount system on the barrel works great, holds great. My Single Six has just northm of 20,000rds. thru it, and is the gun I shoot the most. With bulk ammo, easy to get 1.5in. grps, at 25yrds. With a scope, you should easily get better. Just a thought...maybe look at a red dot. My thinking, the .22 is a short range caliber, so a scope should be low or no power. But I do understand the target of a .22 is usually gonna be small(rabbit, squirrel), so alittle power might make it bigger. If you go with a red dot, get a 1moa dot, smaller the better for "fine" shooting.

Greetings! The 22/22 Mag Ruger Single Six has a barrel that's correctly sized for a 22 Mag cartridge. This usually doesn't matter at all to 22 Long Rifle accuracy as the soft 22 bullet upsets and takes the rifling well.

The 40 grain 22 Mag will usually shoot about 3" lower than a 40 grain 22 Long Rifle (from a revolver @ 25 yards).

A lot of these revolvers are very picky about which 22 Mag bullet they shoot well.

From a 5.5" revolver; a 40 grain 22 Mag will be going about 300 fps faster than a high velocity 22 long rifle.

This is a Single Six that I bought used and it came without the Mag cylinder. I found a Mag cylinder of the correct length online and installed it. It will shoot into .6" @ 25 yards with ammo it likes --- which is WW 40 grain JHP or WW 34 grain JHP. With Fiochhi 40 JHP (which to the eye is identical) it shoots 5" patterns.
