Remington Model 581

Finally found one in mint condition and snapped it up. I have several and they really shoot very well. Cannot afford the prices on new Remington bolt action .22s, so I shop the used gun racks. Anyone else like the Model 581? Take care...

Here's the history from Remingtons site. There were a bunch of these little 22's made and they were good shooters. I had one years ago before moving on to the latest rage the Ruger 10-22. Now that I'm older I've gravitated back to the bolt action simply for the reason that it gives me more realistic practice shooting my big bore bolt guns. I now shoot a CZ 452 Lux in 22 long rifle. You'll have fun with that fine little Remington.

Good choice! I have a few of those fine rifles and enjoy shooting them very much. The prices are really going up on that model rifle so enjoy. All the best...

Thumbs up Remington Model 581

I think they're neat little rifles. I look at them like a mini model 788 with the same artillary style locking lugs. I've always preferred 22 rifles which utilize some method of really locking up the cartridge head and not just the bolt handle into a receiver slot. The 581's also have a very fast lock time, another feature I like. I fitted a .750 diameter straight taper SS barrel into a 581 action, worked over the trigger a bit, and fitted it into a 541 stock. It's become one of my favorite 22 sporters.

I have two 581's, a pair of 582's, and a 580 single shot. I have a couple of 581 actions to rebarrel as well. Great rifles! On two of my serious shooters I added some 4-40 trigger adjustment screws. Sure sweetened up the trigger....~AMMOe

Does anyone have the trigger mechanism for the Remington 581 that they are willing to sell. Mine has broken due to mishandling. I love the gun and want to repair it. Thanks

First "new" .22 rifle I bought and could afford in the '68. It is as accurate as my newer Kimber and the trigger is "just right" in its commercial form. Your right Rickster, they look like a "mini 788".

I got a couple of the 5 round plastic ones from:
outbackgunparts.com
No problems with the 5 shot clips, just the 10 round ones. They are working on a metal model but I'm not sure when they will be available.

I've got a couple of the 580 single shots and love their accuracy, I'd love finding a 582, the 581is more problematic because of the possibility of magazine loss. Great little Lightweight guns!
