Marlin 22 magnum model 783

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I have a chance to buy a Marlin Bolt Action 783 22 magnum from a friend. It looks like it,s in fairly good shape with what I would call normal wear. It fires good and is tube loaded. I don,t know much about this Model Marlin. I would appreciate any input from anyone with any knowkedge of these type Marlins.
It has no scope and he is asking $250.00 for it. I would rate it in the 90% range.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum

I have the same rifle and paid $150 for it at a local gun shop. So it depends. I would offer a bit less than the asking price. All the best...

I used to have one of those 783 for 20 yrs. It was my most accurate .22 I ever had. Sold it like a idiot! $250 seems a bit high thou.

I remember the 783 as being fed by a box magazine, I can be wrong here as I am not up on Marlin Rimfires.
We have a Model 883 which is a tube fed 22 Magnum. We use this rifle as a kitchen gun.
We have killed many skunks, rats and a few raccoon with it over many years.
I gave $180.00 for it in 1989 and felt I was over paying - but it was new in the box.

This rifle is an excellent small game rifle. I prefer the Federal Classic load with the 50-grain bullet as we are able to take a shoulder or a going away shot and have assurance of stopping the critter. This load chronographs 1,470 fps and delivers approximately 355 fpe which is enough for 50-yard shooting.

We have shot some of the newer light bullets in it but always go back to the 50-grain Federal.

The new little 30- or 35-grain Remington plastic tip bullet is the most accurate load in this rifle.

We mounted a straight 4X scope and it works well for “catch as catch can” shooting. We did the parker pen spring mod for the trigger years ago when the old Marlin Talk board was up. It worked fine but one of the after market trigger spring kits is probably better. Out of the box the trigger is too heavy for good shooting.
With a soft nylon sling the Model 883 has proven to be a good “grab and go” rifle for around the farm use.
