Hey there Oneeye.

You can check out Clark Custom on the web.

They will trick out a customers rifle, or do as was done with mine, take a fresh one from the factory.

Were I to have one tricked out, I think I'd really check out the grouping ability of the lighter barrel.

I may have posted way back under this topic, that my rifle was ordered by a fellow in NE Washington, and he didn't like the weight when he got it from Clark, so traded it off ASAP and apparently un-fired for something lighter to carry in the fields/woods.

Yes, the .920 barrel is HEAVY, and where there is little to no heat build up with a .22 I sure think a lighter barrel would be worth the look.

Not sure what the current cost is, but the Clark invoice that came with mine showed $785.00 as I recall, including shipping.

I bought it for $600.00 , so the fellow who ordered it did me a real favor!

Then because of the fact that many people going to the dealer who had it on his rack were looking for Coopers or rifles of much lower cost, the CRuger had sat taking up space and $$$ for apparently quite awhile.

When the dealer first told me about it by phone, he was asking in the 650 - 675 range as I recall. Next time I called him, he dropped the price and when I went to the shop, he excepted my offer of $600.

Sweet shooter, but heavy.

Glad you got your itch scratched but not sure many of us could afford that "scratch"...on my bigger rifles, if they don't shoot under an inch @ 100yds I get rid of them. But on my 22's I pack them for varmint guns around the farm and not target shooting...understand the love of it but just don't do it with the 22. I've even got one of the romanian made 22s similar to a mauser that I keep loaded sitting by the back door of the camp so I don't have to go to the front door for the Rem 552. Glad to see a real interesting post and by the way, what brand of ammo do you use..I use the federal hp's myself. I've also got the 452 CZ but worry about scratching it up...the others are pawn shop guns which already have the dings etc...

Maybe I posted, previously.

Mossberg 346B-and I still have it. Bought it for hy HS graduation, 1958-$28. and I recieved a Weaver B4 scope for on it. I could have asked for a K4. My sister helped me select the scope that some others bought. Had she told me Id have went for the K4-at that time about 15-17 bucks.

Sox,

I have tried just about everything I could come up with, including high and low end.

The barrel quality allows me lots of latitude, but I Have a small stock of match/target stuff like some of the old Federal Gold Metal Ulta Match like used in the Olympics, along with Lapua, Eley, Wolf etc.

A friend an I had a couple informal shoot offs, the first year with the pricey stuff during which his rifle shot neck and neck with mine. Made me wonder at the cost I had invested.

Second year explained a lot with the typical off the shelf ammos. The Clark kept on shooting the nice little groups, while Jack's rifle, with a very few exceptions lagged far behind.

Yep, way more invested then is practical, but that itch don't scratch any more.

My best was a used Marlin 783 bolt action in .22 WMR. Tack driver and small game slayer.

I would have to pick 2 lol..my old ruger 10/22 and my newer Savage bolt.....naturaly the bolt will group better, but those darn 10/22's are just so fun, and cheap to shoot.

Best 22? Hard to say. But the best buy is the Marlin Model 60. Very accurate, inexpensive to purchase. It needs about 200 to 400 rounds to break in.

The Marlin Model 39A is also accurate, and I like cycling the action. A Steven's Favorite is nostalgic. A CZ american bolt gun is just plain fun. And my Browning pump 22 is the first rifle I ever bought.

I had an Anschutz 1416 .22 lr bolt action sporter that was extremely accurate, but I also had a Winchester 9422-M that was almost as accurate and more fun to shoot. Sadly I don't own either of them anymore. Shucks!

One day I'm going to get my 5 or 6 22's out and see which one actually shoots the best group. Should be interesting. I'm betting on the CZ or maybe the 10-22 with the target stock and barrel on it....probably be one of those, but then that little Marlin 39A, is a shooter as is that little Romanian mauser thing....hmmm.. I've also got the Winchester lever gun in 22 mag that shoots real good....

I've swapped and sold a few, gave my earliest .22's to younger cousins and their kids. Most shot just fine.

I will keep my 77/22 VBZ until I'm planted. It was one of the first made, late 80's early 90's? With a 2X-7X Nikon Prostaff, I've bumped off prairie dogs out as far as 150yds or so. It shoots 1 hole 10 shot groups with a couple types of ammo. I keep a supply of Winchester HSHP for pests, it shots the very best with Federal HS Match.

I've had my current 10/22's for a long time, I recently converted my SS Carbine with a .920 Green Mountain 16.25" Blued Fluted barrel in a Hogue stock. The trigger was cleaned up, and received a Wolf trigger spring to get the weight down. I just ordered a Tactical Innovations trigger assembly. With a 2X-7X Nikon Camo scope, it's easily the most accurate .22LR I've ever owned. Remington Target and Federal Match shoot "off the scale".

As soon as I figure out the numbers, I'm likely to own a CZ455 Varmint with three barrels.

Best for the buck? They last so long with decent care, the cost of even the pricier options is in the class of the daily cost of toilet paper. Nobody saves that.

We have so many shooters who should be at various rifle matches sevaral times each shooting season.

Our club would love to have more shooters willing to try to shoot the silhouettes at 100 yards, from the bench.

I believe they are 1/4 scale in size, not very big at 50 and SMALL at 100 yards.

Shooters who have ''one hole' guns--COME ON OUT. Only costs a couple bucks and you get bragging rights-no big trophies or $$$ payouts.

langenc,

Boy I wish we had a group close to where I live that did that kind of shooting.

There is a winter time group that shoot .22 rifle postal matches with position shooting, but have never been into that sort of thing.

Tried to get interest enough to get a .22 gallery pistol - slow/timed/rapid - 50' group together, but that didn't fly.

I'd even go for a air gun postal match group.

I once shot so bad with my handgun that everyone could out shoot me with my own gun. Sold it!!!

Wasn't until a friend talked me into shooting 50' gallery .22 matches that I began to shoot well enough to enjoy it again.

Trophy or not, that kind of shooting can really sharpen your skills.

We shoot 22 bench rest, 22 BR silhouette and a 'Ruger challenge' last summer.

Shoots are monthly w/ weekly practices.

Bad part for me they are 140 mi, one way. I believe I made all the matches last summer, May thru Oct.

My wife shoots ocassionally. I shouldnt take her any more, she beats me,. w/ little to no practice.

I went thru Ideeeho last summer, southern. I should have looked you up.

WOW, 140 miles!

And I don't even go to the range that is maybe 35 - 40 miles. Tooooo much gas!

Sure sounds like FUN!!!

You would have had a good and long drive to get from South Ideeeeeho up to the good part of the state.

Sounds like you should buy the wife a new rifle of her choice. Need to keep a shooting partner like that really happy

Crusty or Coot-whichever:

The rifle she shot was new, to her. She had never shot it.

I did get another Suhl-grade 10 when good friend died. His family sold it to me. I had always asked him "is that rifle for sale" and they would never consider. Now it is in my closet and he is in heaven, organizing the shooters/shooting.

Wife didnt understand why I/we needed another rifle. I told her it was different-it is black, Other ones gold and blue.

Wife and I used to fish for Steelhead a lot when we had a boat.

GREAT!!!!! When I bought lures, always needed to buy two of everything!

Seems it should be the same with shoot'in equipment

I have several .22 rifles. When you ask about the best one, I have to reply "For what purpose?" My first was a Wischa, magazine fed autoloader. It let me down last year in a 50 yd. match, it shot exactly where I aimed it.
My Henry lever action had a 3x9 50mm scope on it, and is great for exterminating skunks and other vermin. The tubular magazine enable me to shoot shorts, longs and Long Rifle ammo; I use a lot of CB caps because I live inside the city limits and the local police frown on firearm discharge in town. The CB caps are very quiet; I've heard louder pellet rifles.
The most accurate rifle I have is a Winchester Deluxe 270 pump, another tubular fed rifle. Shoot anything! has a good scope, (all my rifles are scoped (my vision is not the best as I get closer to 70), my last 25 yd target results were 5-X's, 4-nines, and 1 8 ring (I jerked that one). I bought the rifle last year at an auction, paid too much, but it was worth it. This is my favorite shooter.

If you have a tight budget, the Savage MkIIF is a very accurate rifle. Nice if you don't mind the tupperware stock. I put a Tasco Buckhorn 3-9 x 50mm scope on it and find that the rifle is more accurate than me. Total package came out to less than $200.
My most accurate, reliable rifle is the Remington 582(tube magazine) with a Simmons 3-9 x 32mm scope.
Using CCI CB shorts, I can put 5 rounds in nearly the same hole at 25yards, opens up to about 1/2" at 50 yards, mainly because of my shakes. Some of the members have listed some really fine rifles. Bottom line...What pleases your pocketbook, eyes and how the rifle fits.
Good luck and safe shooting
