Sights for Nylon 66

The only problem I've had with the Rem Nylon 66 is the lousy groove setup for scope mounting. I went ahead and used Weaver mounts to hold a scope on the rifle. It was a job as the grooves are just too shallow. The scope has been on for a number of years but I wonder how many Nylon 66 owners use scopes and how many use the simple iron sights?

I never liked a scope on a Nylon, because the receiver cover it mounts to is not really solidly connected to either the barrel or the receiver itself - IOW, if only a little pressure is applied to the side of the scope, the POI will shift. Enough pressure, as from a good bump, and off comes the scope.

FWIW, I just screwed the rear sight on mine all the way "down", for a short range zero - since I used it primarily to play the eloquent game of Dump Rat Shooting.

I love my Nylon 66 but I gave up on using it with a scope years ago. My theory is that as the sheet metal receiver heats up during a plinking session the shots begin to walk to the side, I forget which direction. It never had this tendency when using the open sights.

I have owned my 66 for over 50 years and have shot it more than all my other guns combined. Over the years I have had several scopes on it but always end up taking them off. I think that actually I have shot this gun so much that many times I don't even need to use the sights. I walk two miles every morning on dirt roads near my home. I need to do this to prevent back problems. I carry the 66 every day, mostly for snakes that the dog manages to find occasionally. It is much handier to carry without a scope.

Factory sights the whole way. My Apache Brown 66 is just fine without a scope even though I've had better days aiming it. It's not a target rifle, that's what the 10-22 does for me. Love the plastic rifle, have owned it since a teen back in '74. Scopes are not reliable with this rifle.
