Remington 870 super magnum barrels.

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I recently got my first shotgun. Its a Remington 870 express super magnum....

I bought it over a standard magnum because it can shoot 3 1/2" shells... I probably wont shoot them often, but like the option....

So now I'm reading that 870 barrels are all interchangeable EXCEPT for the super magnum.... Can anyone tell me why this is? Could I get a standard 870 barrel and mount it on my super magnum as long as I dont try to shoot 3 1/2 shells? I would just be shooting 2 3/4" shells. Or is there some big difference that would prevent me from doing that?

Just a guess because I've never compaired all of the models. I think the super magnum has a longer reciever. Barrel extention is likley longer too.

Extra barrels!

Dacaur

The 870 SuperMag receiver will accept all other 870 barrels (except Special Field). Don't try to fire shells longer than the barrel is chambered for!

Check this out: http://www.remington.com/products/fi...mag-combo.aspx

SuperMag combo with with 3" chambered slug barrel.

Yes, there is an error in the owner's manual that contradicts this.

Yes, you can fire any length 12 gauge shell in the SuperMag.

Hey Dacaur,

Yes, you can use a barrel from an 870 Express with a 3" chamber on your 870 Super Magnum.

http://www.remington.com/sitecore/co...ls-tables.aspx

From the Remington website: "NOTE: Model 870 Extra Barrels with 3" chambers will fit Super Magnum, Magnum, and 2-3/4" receivers. These barrels will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells when used on Magnum receivers. Use only 2-3/4" shells when these barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers."

Remington says?

Interesting contrast:

Remington advises:

"NOTE: Model 870 Extra Barrels with 3" chambers will fit Super Magnum, Magnum, and 2-3/4" receivers. These barrels will handle both 2-3/4" and 3" shells when used on Magnum receivers. Use only 2-3/4" shells when these barrels are used on 2-3/4" receivers."

http://www.remington.com/sitecore/co...ls-tables.aspx

And then in the 870 Owners Manual on page 9:

"BARREL INTERCHANGEABILITY:

NOTE:
All Model 870™ 12-gauge barrels are interchangeable without adjustment, except the Model 870 12-gauge Super Magnum™ and Model 870 12-gauge Special Field.

WARNING! BEFORE LOADING, ALWAYS CHECK THE BARREL MARKING FOR THE CORRECT GAUGE AND CHAMBER LENGTH. NEVER USE AMMUNITION WHICH EXCEEDS THE CHAMBER LENGTH SHOWN ON THE BARREL."

Thanks guys.... I saw that about barrel interchangeability in the online manual, but I figured that the "without adjustment" meant not only to the gun, but to the type of ammo used.... Obviously if you are using 3 1/2" ammo, you would have to make an ammo adjustment if you put on a barrel with a 3" chamber, right? Or maybe it just wont accept the stock barrel off a normal magnum, but will accept one of the "extra barrels" listed on the website? Also note that they dont list any separate super magnum barrels for the 870, while they do list extra super magnum barrels for the 11-87 one with the note that it has a 3" chamber... The manual combined with the info on the website, I take that to mean I can use one of the listed 870 magnum "extra barrels" on my super magnum reciver, but need to use 2 3/4 or 3" shells with it..... hmmmmm

You are correct:

Except for the Special Field model (now discontinued) all 870 barrels will fit on all 870 shotguns. However, do not use any shotshells longer than the barrel is chambered for.

Extra 3.5" chambered SuperMag barrels can be ordered, see:

I just wish I could use regular 11-87 barrels on my 11-87 Super Magnum, oh well.
