Remington 1100 breaking scopes?

I have a Remington 12ga 1100 slug gun. I have the older style cantilever mount with a rifled choke tube and I/C tube. I have had several scopes go bad on this gun, and I think the current one just went also. I think with the bolt going forward into battery, it is similar to the double recoil that spring airguns experience, which destroys non airgun scopes in a hurry. Has anyone had any problems similar to this with the 1100 or any other auto shotguns?

Is this with a "Shotgun" scope, one designed for shotguns?

Are you using a good high powered rifle scopes? An 1100 certainly shouldn't bother any of those. Never heard of your problem with anything but an inexpensive scope.

A Redfield Tracker and two Bushnell Sportview scopes were used, all were 4X.

You do get a double wammy with an auto and they are hard on scopes. Shooting off the bench I remove the gas rings and put them back in for hunting. I got a Burris pistol scope on my 1100 and have never had any problems.

It isn't the shotgun. Redfield Tracker (old scope) and Bushnell Sportview scopes are low end. I use Bushnell trophys on shotguns and even crossbows, where all the recoil is straight ahead. Tasco, Simmons, old Redfield (1990s) will just not take the mechanical forces (for long).

But I think you have nailed the force problem with and auto slamming home (reverse recoil).

If a 12 gauge shell going off doesn't do it I'll be darned if I believe the bolt going home is doing anything. When you slam the bolt home it shouldn't make you spill your coffee.

Slug loads are about as aggressive as it gets in shotgunning. It takes a good scope to stand up to an autoloader with those rounds. Go with a better scope and your problems will disappear.

Low cost scopes are not built with mechanicals to take refverse recoil, since that doesn't occur with rifle shooting.

This is why most manufacturers make special scopes for crossbows and shotguns. But AI've found that higher grade optics are strong enough. No 12 guage kicks like the 416 Weatherby with 400 grain max loads; and even mid range priced scopes can take that. It's not the kick, it is the kick back.

I have had a cheap 2.5X-30 Deerfield on mine for over 10 years and not a lick of problems. I'm assuming you are using a 4x-40, maybe the extra weight is a problem, just guessing.

The older style Remington cantilever barrels had a removable cantilever extension for standard riflescopes. I never used the cantilever extention on my 870 and simply mounted an extended eye relief Burris 1.5X Scout scope on the barrel base.
