CNN reporting 9 dead and up to 30 wounded. Possibly 2 or more shooters in uniform but not known if they are military or impersonating soldiers. Sounds like they are turning out the troops, armed to deal with situation.
Update: Very fluid situation. Commanding General, III C stated 12 dead, 31 wounded by 1 US soldier who was killed. Very tragic situation.

I'm just now following this tragic event. They are now reporting that they captured the shooter alive but wounded. The shooting happened at the Deployment center. The troops are usually there in their PT gear or uniforms. They go through screening of medical, dental, power of attorneys/wills, shots, normal stuff before deployments. The building if it is the one I went trough last year was an gym with hundards of people in it. Troops do not bring weapons there and as shown to be a target rich enviroment. Allot of people do not realize that service members can not carry concealed legally on military installations. Seems the shooter was a US Major-phychirist, this coward who is Muslim was upset about deploying to Iraq after Thanksgiving. Iraq is pretty safe right now and as a Dr. would never leave the compound! I've been deployed to Iraq 6 times and now in Afghanistan. He needs to be put in front of a firing squad.

Second time a muslim in the U.S. Army has shot up an installation. Last time it was in Iraq. Sad - As usual this will bring out the anti-gun crowd. This case has nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with the war on terror.

Gaahh....guys....don't call him a muslim or a terrorist.....yer just asking for a fatwah on yer head. Anything that can be done to deflect attention away from the extremist terrorist.....a firing squad is too good for him.

I see this got moved to Military News, agreed, probably the best forum. Thought about moving it myself but someone beat me to the punch.
Sad and yet another indication that people who think guns "only belong in the hands of the police and military" are severely misguided. If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere.
Tragic.

Screwballs are everywhere, in all walks of life.
Agree that upon recovery and trial, the verdict should be a swift trip in front of a firing squad.

I saw one news report mention that the shooter had magazines with capacity of 20 rounds
and that the pistols were privately purchased and not military issue. I guess that
means he was shooting 9mm.. The lady officer that brought him down was hit
three times all in the extremities and she hit him four times once in the abdoman.
She was a firearms instructor and must have been a pretty good shooter.
I cannot imagine the situation, both facing each other in the wide open
just firing away at each other. There is no mention of what weapon she
was carrying or using. One other fact I heard was that he shot over one
hundred rounds before being bought down. Kudos to the female officer
hero.

Heard today that he was carrying two pistols. First the one he used the most was a FN FiveSeven in 5.7x28mm and the other a Smith .357 revolver. The civilian officer more than likely was carrying a Beretta 92/M9. That's what I remember seeing them carrying there at Fort Hood last year. I still think he should stand for Treason.

Ironically, it is a classic Old West shoot-out between the law and the bad guy. If Hollywood had filmed a shoot-out in this manner, we'd all laugh it off as farsical.
Squared off and with guns blazing, each scoring hits on their opponent before the bad guy fall to the ground, bullet riddled. But in this instance, the bad guy lives to be tried by the legal system, whereupon he is sentanced to death and dies on a rope, or at a firing squad. We'll just have to watch and wait as the final act plays out.
I'm for hanging by pig intestines, but we'll have to see what punishment the President allows.
