I used to have one some years ago. I liked it, except for the lack of good bullets that were available at that time. There are more and better bullets available now and I would like it better than I already did. I killed my first whitetail buck(Post Army) with one and it fell in it's tracks. I probably should have kept that one too. Who am I kidding, I should have kept them all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HD1

i have no experience with it but i do have a 338/06AI that has been pure joy to work with. considering that there is a mere .015" difference and the emergence of such bullets as the tsx's and the tough ballistic tip, accubond, etc. i think that it would be a wonderfull cartridge to hunt with.
i think that a person could make much worse choices than to barrel up an 8/06AI!!!!

I have two and they are joy to hunt with. You approach .300 Win mag power and have a lot less recoil.

Around 15 years ago, I bought a German Mauser chambered for 8mm-06 Ackley Improved. I made a mess of brass and worked up some loads. The rifle was a gorgeous piece that the Vet had put a fair amount of money into. The rifle shot okay, not great, but adequate for deer hunting out to 300 yards, which in Maryland was about all that I would ever need. Workng up loads and fire forming was fun....for a while. Fact is, I could always wring more out of my 30-06, than I could from that wildcat, so I sold the rifle and the dies.
I still have some brass and loaded cartridges, if anyone is interested in them. Will swap for some bullets, propellant, or what-have-you? I will dig them out and count what I have. contact sashe@cfl.rr.com Bullets (not cartridges, just bullets) that I can use are 7mm, 6.5mm, 6mm.
