what is your favorite soft and/or hard case to carry your rifle ?

Have had both and never thought about it. Good question and as I think about it - soft for short distance travel and hard for long distance for no real good reason other than my own preference.

I really consider a good soft case to be an essential and have at least half a dozen of them. How many of you put your gun in a soft case, before climbing up into a stand, and then pull the case up with your rope? I like doing this as it is much quieter and protects the gun from dings and the scope from getting knocked around.

The hard cases just seem too bulky, but I agree with jmortimer, if I were to travel any distance (haven't had to yet) it would be a hard case. If I were flying with said gun, it would be a bullet proof case with a thousand locks on it and a wireless security system! I'd be too paranoid about those liberals taking it away when I wasn't looking! :P

any SPECIFIC one ? I like the soft case for short trips to the range, but I'm not so hot on the buckskin with fringe type for my 1885 rifle.

Have to agree with others on merits of many hard cases being big, bulky and in some instances worthless in protection. Prefer the natural fibers used in canvas quilted lined cases for transport and storage. Use them to transport my collection to gun shows where I display them for the general publics pleasure.

My only complaint is there are none made in shorter lengths. The shortest is 38" for scoped rifles and this is way too long for say a Ruger 10/22. Since I've looked and been unable to locate shorter canvas quilted lined cases (Boyt and Cabela's have them as well as Beretta etal) probably will resort to having them shortened by seamstress.

The Kolpin soft case with the rubber ribs. Soft, quiet and easy to handle like most soft cases but rubber armored where it needs to be.

leather Boyts might be a nice compliment to rolling blocks and falling blocks, what would be perfect would be something more authentic to the time period yet provide more protection
