Rossi? Good starter gun?

Hey men, I am looking at buying my middle son a Rossi Trifecta as a starter gun. What appealed to me was the size - in between those real little ones and a normal sized gun- and the gun comes with 22 single shot, 20gauge and 243 barrels. It is on clearence at a Dicks for $159. I know i'm not getting winchester grade stuff here but wanted to hear any opinions on Rossi. Also, I have never used a break open gun before...is it a good style for beginners? We learned on bolt action so wasn't sure if people had any experience or opinions on the break open v. bolt action. Thanks for the help. T

I tend to favor the H&R single-shot action, but both of them have the same basic pros n' cons. Break open guns are fine for shooters of any age, although they are not going to be quite as accurate as a bolt gun, on average. For big-game hunting, it will rarely be a big enough difference to matter. To get all three of those barrels, which are ideal for a young shooter, for $159, you almost can't go wrong. I started my son out with an H&R combo that included a .243 and 50 cal ML barrel and he has enjoyed shooting them.

I don't think you could go wrong for the price. A decent .22 will cost that much..... good luck.

Crickett Firearms is another fine choice for youth sized long guns.

I looked at the crickett but just could not pass on the price of other after reading the first two comments by broom and mikeg. Cant bring it home because of this upsidedown state i live in but looking forward to tomorrow. Even a beginner gun like this gets me fired up! Can't wait to give it a good look over tomorrow...middle guys bday is 2nd of april so can't wait to see his face. thanks to all...as usual you guys always have great insight. T

I bought my son a Mossberge plinker 22 for his first if I had a little more money I would and still may get him that trifecta package.

The store I bought it from was a Dick's in Tinley Park IL. They had 3 left on clearence. $159. 3 barrells .22,20g,.243. If you have a Dick's sporting goods near you they might ship it.

When you pick it up, hopefully you can get 3-4 different types of .22 ammo to see if your barrel has a preference for one, over another. A good 4X scope, good-shooting .22LR and plenty of ammo to go through will keep a kid happy for quite a while...heck, it STILL makes me happy.
