NO. 1-A .303 ordered, peep sight?
I placed an order for a .303 British No.1-A this morning. It will be awhile coming so I thought I would start to educate myself on sights. I owned a .375 Tropical years ago with a Williams FP receiver sight. The sight worked like a charm but the look was a bit cluttered.
One plan is to remove the quarter rib and that eliminates the sights locked to the rib.
A tang sight would be ideal but the safety button is a problem.
The XS Ghost Ring company lists a sight but I can't find a picture of it anywhere, any help?

I am SO envious! I had to cancel my order due to money problems.
I was thinking of a peep sight as well, but I havn't looked into it at all. Like you said --> they're a long time comin'.
Did Clay give you a timeline on the phone?

No timeline but he did say that Ruger has assigned a production number for the run. I looked on Ruger's site but it must be in the Ruger dealer area, couldn't find it. I think he said I was 37 on the retail list with some dealers already ordering as well. It will be a line item so if circumstances change at least there will be oppurtunities to buy. Where are you located?
I can't afford it either but a friend is buying my Marlin to cover the deposit.
Whoops, see your from Saskatoon. One quick word of thanks. It was your message attached to your threads that informed me. I was searching about Ruger #3's thinking how nice it would be to rebarrel one to .303. You can imagine my shock at your info!

Bob, have you looked at the New England Custom Guns peep? it clamps right on the quarter rib and is adjustable for windage and elevation. I bought one years ago to go on my #1H in .375 H&H and I really like it compared to the factory rear sight.

Yes I've looked at it and it is a posibility. I've posted on 3 sites and this sight is well regarded. It may not work for me.
One of my options is the removal of the quarter rib. I found a picture of a #1 with an express sight on the barrel without the quarter rib. It was a nice rifle. The #3 Rugers look nice as well without the quarter rib and iron sights
A tang sight might work but the safety button is an issue as well as case ejection. Lots to think about while I wait for the rifle..

Your welcome. I'm glad I put it in there then! Congrats on your rifle, even if you can't afford it. :P

Don't remove the quarter rib the No.1 looses that English look without it. If you want a peep sight you can replace the present leaf with a peep sight. However the best thing to do is a small variable scope.
Keep us informed as you work up loads for your No.1. I have shot heavy loaded .303's in a P14 Enfield. The P14 has a rather loose chamber in deference to the cordite used at the time. Cordite as you all know is very temperture sensitive. In a modern tight chamber you should be able to really make this old war horse into a stomper.

Sounds like a great rifle. I would have ordered one myself if it wasn't in stainless.

I was just told on CGN that the gun is not stainless, but it wasn't Clay that said so. I never thought they were stainless either. I'll wait on what the man himself has to say.

I'm also jealous of you! I certainly love the .303 British and would definately own one of these fine No. 1 rifles if I had the loot.

I can tell you guys that Australia will have delivered 70 Ruger No.1A rifles in .303B. I beleive at last 45 have been pre-orderd with deposits paid.
As far as a Peep sight is concerned, I beleive NECG make a Peep that fits on the Ruger dovetail and also replacement front sight beads.

NECG will export overseas though some companys can't despite the fact that Australia and Canada are allies of the US in their war against terror. (Rant over)

This chambering is hitting a nerve in the old Commonwealth. It is nice to see the interest in a fine old military cartridge.
I've heard lots of positives regarding the NECG sight.

Sorry for the misinformation. I thought I saw on the the other thread that it was going to be stainless. Guess I will have to look into one then.
Thanks again for clearing this up for me.
Is anyone ordering one here in the states?
Dan
