I have the above bought to allow some young nephews to hunt deer at very short distances under fifty yards. I have no intention to scope this rifle as it is ideal for my purpose. I test shot the rifle and it printed high right burying the bead in the buckhorn notch set at its lowest point. My load was some 200gr semi WC lead loads loaded for a revolver sometime past. I have plans to load a stiffer load of AA#7 and use a 230gr XTP. My fear is with added recoil it might print higher. The rifle already has about as high of front sight I've seen and with the back sight bottomed out it concerns me a little. Anybody have experience with one of these? I have given thought to adding a Williams receiver sight but if a cheaper alternative is there; I may want to persue that first. Thanks.

They're supposed to come with a Marbles 57 sight that is .570" tall, but some come with a lower sight. If you want a less expensive peep sight than the Williams FP, try the Williams WGRS, it mounts in the same two rear scope mount holes as the FP and FP-TK, H&R sells it for $25 shipped, it's the same sight that comes on the H&R Buffalo Classic 45-70, big brother to your carbine.

Just a heads up on slower loads, they'll print higher than hunting loads since they're in the barrel a bit longer and due to muzzle rise will hit higher than faster loads. When you try the stiffer loads and the WGRS, you may still need a taller front sight, a Williams .250" dovetail riser will make life easy if you need it.

Here is the rear sight that works good on the H&R 45coltBC. Many of us on the H&R forum are rechambering these rifles to 454casull or 460 S&W. Really enjoy mine and think you will feel the same about yours with a good rear sight

If you are restricting the yardage to 50 and under, can you go with a milder load that recoils less and bring the POI down to where you want it? I have a Model 92 in 44/40 that printed quite high, with the hot loads I run through it, so I had to get a taller front blade. Went with fiber optics that are easy for my teenage daughter to see in hunting situations. She got her first doe with it last fall, at a range of ~70 yards.

The 45BC in most case will shoot a couple feet high with even the mildest load,don't know why they put them on the gun as they know the set-up won't work with that Williams rear

Maybe in a longer barrel what you stated holds true as I have not yet tried a hotter load. I am anxious to find out. Thanks!

After another trip to the range my .45LC still printed high and to the right when shooting higher pressure loads. I am at the bottom of my adjustment on my back sight and my front sight is .570 in height. I will scope it with a 2 1/2X Weaver and try again. I am concerned that my firing pin strikes way off center of my primer and I had one case come out blue/black after firing. Would crimping be recommended for these guns? Does the position of where the firing pin strikes change when you change barrels? I am new with these rifles and would like some help. Thanks, Remfarmer

A little off center ain't to bad but a lot could be. different barrels can have a different strike point but never by the outer edge.My gun has the same front sight as yours and with the Marbles rear works great from slowest to hottest as far as adjusting to target goes. Some of these mass produced barrels are not bored correct and may be a big part of your firring pin and sight problem.H&R will make it right so give them a call till you get the answer you want.
