Hey guys, i have fallen in love with this rifle. The only problem is that it isnt in my safe yet. Does anyone own one of these rifles? Can i expect good accuracy from them(1MOA or better)? i like the .243 cal because it is pretty versatile when it comes to varmint and deer.
I will be shooting anywhere from 50 to 700 yards if i can load up a stable enough round.
PS how much should i be putting aside just for the rifle????i figure around 9 ish?????

I have a late model Winchester 1885 high grade low wall in 22 LR. It has a long octagon barrel. I have only taken it to the range once so far. It was shooting into one ragged hole at 25 yards using the open sights, off a rest.
I've been dreaming about one of these in 45-70 to hunt with, and I think the 243 will serve you just fine. Overall they are very accurate. They were initially designed to be target rifles, in calibers such as 45-70, etc. I've never heard of one that didn't shoot well. As far as price goes, I would say you'll be lucky to find one below $1K. GB has had some in various calibers in that price range, NIB. Good luck, and don't forget the pictures once you get it!

I had a Browning 1885 Low Wall in .243 Winchester and it was the first of about five different calibers of this rifle that didn't shoot well. Whether Browning or Winchester, I have owned three .45-70s, .270 Winchester, .30-06 and the .243 Winchester. All shot well except the .243. I returned it to the gun shop and my money was refunded (reputable guy). Never could determine why it shot so poorly. These guns shoot well typically and you can find some bargains on Gunbroker. 9 ish seems about right, unless you find one as new in the box or with extras.
