Well, my somewhat controvercial Reloader7 load with the 300 gr. XTP Magnum HP did a nice number on the buck I shot yesterday. He came runnin low from my right at full speed. I brought up the marbles sights and hit him in the 2 sec gap between the woods. He went 15 steps and dropped. The Magnum did it's job and went in normal size and came out only about 1.5". No super explosion like the std. XTP's will at 1600+ fps. Pretty happy with the combo. 1 shot, 1 deer, the way I like to do it.
I like the gun and cartridge. Good job on the buck. I wish that I could hold one up one handed like that. Guess I need to work out or get a little younger.
Rofl. he's hanging on a gambrel Hook on a tree limb above. I can pick one up but not stand there smilin like that... lol I was tired and actually leaning on the rope. hehe
Congrats on the hunt, a 45 colt in a rifle with good bullets kill better than most think. I hunt with the 300gr XTP Mags on top of lots of h-110 and it is a great bullet that leaves nice exit wounds. The regular 300gr XTP over-expands and gives poor penetration when driven close to 1600fps out of my 16" 94 trapper barrel. The regular XTP is a good bullet out of a pistol but out of a rifle the velocity is just to much. My little winchester trapper is the perfect powerful, light-weight woods gun and I will never sell it. I imagine you probably feel the same way about your 45 colt rifle too !!
+1 on the expansion. Just perfect with the Mag. I have had a hard time finding the 240 mags in stock, so 300 has been the ticket. I used to use H-110, but really like Reloader7 a TON better. Less kick, higher velocity and NO soot in barrel. Perfectly clean every shot.
