Alabama hogs?

Similar to the "Mississippi hogs" thread, Where is a good place to hunt hogs in Alabama with firearms (preferably centerfire rifle but maybe also blackpowder)?

Along The River

Alabama River that is.

I went up to the Camden area several weeks ago to take a look at a hunting club that I was offered mambership in. It was located 'bout 13 miles south of Camden, between Hwy 41 and the Alabama River. There was more hog sign in that whole area(1300+ acres) than I have ever seen anywhere else in my entire life.

The club president told me that the members could shoot them all year,as many as they wanted, and could even trap them if they wanted. The club has about 2 miles of frontage on the river, and along with the associated cypress swamps, were completely overrun with hogs.

It was too far for me(from Pensacola) and no comm once past Frisco City. I ended up joining a club closer to home. Some hog sign here but not like up north. ------pruhdlr

I have a daughter that lives near there and I am in the area a couple of times a year. Can you post the name of the hunting club and the membership price? You can also shoot me a PM with the information.

Hey guys,

I don't know if ya'll are interested in hunting public land but we have some good WMA's that have a lot of hogs on them. you can hunt them everyday during hunting season with a .22 magnum, and on the gun deer hunts you can use you deer rifle. A management area license is only $16.00 and, I'm pretty sure the biologists would love for someone to take a few out of the herd.

.22 magnum!

Limiting hunters to using .22 rimfire magnum firearms on hogs is a sure invitation to wounded and lost animals.

The Alabama Conservation Department does not trust hunters with adequate weapons to take hogs during the small game season.

My $.02 ----->

For a state to intentionally allow(force) its people the use of a .22Mag on hogs is shear stupidity.

Shows how out of touch the states governing body really is.

Shame on Alabama !! ------pruhdlr

Well ----

You can also use a shotgun with #4 Birdshot
(or smaller) ,.22LR , muzzleloaders .40 and under and Bows (no broadheads) to shoot hogs on Alabama Wildlife Management Areas during the small game season.

None of these are legal to hunt deer during that season.

GA WMAs are the same way on hog firearms. Only small game guns during small gme seasons. Any cal muzzleloader may be used so thats what I would use. Big game guns during big game season. Theres a range on the local WMA that I use. Always saw a lot of empty 22 mag cases lying around. One day I saw two guys checking the zero on their 22 mag rifles so I asked what they used them for. They said hogs during the small game season. Hit them halfway between the ear and eye. Does the job OK according to them.

I'm like you guys I'm not going out to hunt them with a smaller caliber rifle. I killed one a couple years ago while i was deer hunting off in a thick cane bottom and after i shot i must have made the whole herd mad because they just got back where i couldn't see them and started growling. I don't like them I bowhunt a lot and they are messing up some of my deer hunting spots so i say kill 'em all.

just to clear the air the use of rimfire weapons for pigs is only on the wma's during small game season, the rule actually says the legal arms for that particular season such as during bow season you can use a bow and broadheads. on private land you can use whatever you want and there is no closed season to the best of my knowledge. i have a question how would a turkey load do on a hog i seen some while turkey hunting but they weren't close enough, just wondering if it was enough firepower?

I talked with a game warden and he said most of the hogs were in the southern part of the state. Haven't seen a one up here in the Taladega National Forest. I retired from California and moved here a few years back. I was really surprized to see a very short season on hogs in the Wildlife Management Areas. Heck, in California you can hunt hogs all you want, whenever you want. No season and no limit. Some people even ask for hunters to come and hunt hogs on their property. Those hoge go through their land like a gaint roto tiller. At least I don't have to worry about Alabama burning up every year.

that true cowpoke Alabama isn't to bad to catch on fire like CA but we have a pretty good population of hogs in NW Alabama and it keeps getting bigger every year. They do destroy a lot of habitat and they are spreading like wildfire. also you can hunt pigs year round on private land no closed season no bag limit.

Trapper,
Send some of them bad boys over here to NE Alabama! CA has a lot of BLM land to hunt on without all the restriction. I'm still getting my feet wet here. When I first got here I picked up a .54 T/C Hawkens and worked up a load with the 400 grain Maxi Ball just for hogs. 99% of my hunting is with traditional muzzle loaders, most with round balls. The wife and I fell in love with this area back in 1975, when I was stationed here with the Army. We are very happy here. A lot of people asked why we left California to come here. Our reply is, "You never lived in California!"...lol.

Cowpoke, its not that far from northeastern side to the northwestern side of the state i have hunted Little River WMA and Lauderdale WMA in the same day but gas was cheaper then. as far as blackpowder most of the wma's will have an early hunt before gun season opens. I saw a large sow on the pw hunt last year. Also black warrior wma and maybe the Bankhead natinal forest have an early fall and early spring firearms pig season. I've hunted up there some but never saw any hogs but they are there.

Chocolocco is only 15 minutes away. I've seen some big does and some nice turkeys, out of season of course. A lot of squirrels, few rabbits and no pigs. Just have to keep scouting. I may hunt deer, birds and small game alone, which is not the smartest thing to do. But I would never go for pig alone. Some of these guys talking about going for pigs with a .22 Mag. More nerves than I have....lol. I.ve seen some big pigs! Shane, where do you hunt?
