Wildcats on the 500 S&W

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I was just curious if there were any wildcats built on the 500 S&W. I was thinking it might go well with a host of rifle bullet calibers and off decent velocity out of a shorter case. Perhaps a .338 or .375 bullet for a good bullet selection?....

.500 JRH, but that's just shorter, not a different diameter.

In a rifle or single shot it would not be a problem, but in a revolver, that is just trouble in the making.
Remember the old .22 Jet? When you use a bottle neck case in a revolver there is quite often, not always but way too often to make the project doable, you get case set-back that locks up the cylinder. While the long shallow angle shoulder on the Jet was the biggest problem with that case, even sharp shouldered cases can suffer from it if everything is not set up just perfectly and the cylinder chamber walls not keep perfectly dry.

I was kind of thinking about a second barrel for my NEF rifle. Something to take it out to 250 yards tops.

There is the 22X500 / 6mmX500 / 25X500 / 6.5X500 and 7mmX500...

All cases have minimum body taper, short necks and a 40 degree shoulder angle...

The same thing has been done on the 460 S&W case as well....

7mm x 500 sounds intriguing. Where can one find info on that one? Google came up with a lot of junk.

Are those being used in revolvers or single shots or bolts? Only in a revolver would there be a problem. Even the old .22 Jet worked just fine in a bolt gun or single shot.

These 500 and 460 based cartridges are being designed around the T/C Encore and Ruger #1. I will be posting on them over here after I finish making the barrels and have some loads developed for each caliber of cartridge...

So far though, it looks like the 7mmX500 is going to give the 7mm-08 a run for it's money....

Yes, they would work perfectly in those applications. They should be fairly good performers and with all the powders we have to choose from these days, certainly you should find several to make them scream.

Well that sounds like good 250 yard medicine to me. What's the chances of getting an NEF barrel made to chamber it?

I build barrels for the H&R Ultra with the SB-2 receiver and when time permits, I will be rebarreling one of my guns to see how well this cartridge performs in it....

When you are up and running with them I'm interested in a 6.5x500. As long as I can get all the dies...

6.5 x 500 sounds just as agreeable. That would be a good match for 160Grain Hornady pills. Plus all the good 120-140 choices. Then all of the light varmint weight bullet just makes plenty of great icing on the cake. One rifle, two barrels, any game. I like the sound of it.
