Could the 475 Linebaugh cartridge be cut down to 454 Casull length and used in a 480 Ruger Puma 92 with a longer chamber? The goal would be a slight increase in velocity with heavy bullets with a modest increase in pressure. I'm not trying to create a .475 caliber cartridge with 454 pressures, but somewhere between the 480 Ruger and the 454. Would I need a 454 Puma 92 action with a 480 Ruger bolt and barrel?

Off the top of my backside...

The 92 was often, the larger action, 44/40, converted to .44 Magnum. At the same time, how much more metal have you got to cut away. -??- .45 Long Colt has a tiny rim, same as .44 Mag, and works at pressures 1/2 the Magnum, approx. As I recall, the Linebaughs were made originally from cut down .348 Winchester brass. Now that is a rim. Old .50/70 rim. Larger than .45/70. I would wonder if you could still be safe with that chamber even at .45 Colt pressures. Now the Puma would be modern steel, unlike the 92 Black powders... if there were any. 73's were. I think I would get a very, very good metal man to use his finest measuring tools to give you a read. And not push things. luck.

This was more of an academic exercise since the Puma will accept a 454 Casull length cartridge and a 480 Ruger size rim. The 454 Puma is heat treated to take higher pressures than a normal 92. I thought a slightly longer .475 cartridge would allow a slightly faster velocity than the 480 Ruger while keeping pressures less than the 454 Casull.
