Anyone with any thoughts or comments on this wilcat ? Picked up a nice 26" heavy barrel with mauser threads and trying to decide whether or not to barrel it up. Thanks, HD1

I've read some posts by a guy who shot one in F-class briefly. His main comment was that it ate barrels pretty fast and he didn't use it for long before he switched to something else. He didn't talk about it much other than that, though.

I had two build one with 1/14 twist barrel other 1/8 for the VLD must say the 1/14 twist @ 4000fps plus with 68gr bullets was fun to shot and alittle hard on barrels. the 8 twist was OK but I didn't get along with it my 6BR with 8 twist was alittle better it was more me that the barrel on the 6x284.

Only reason I didn't put a 1/10 on the 6x284 I was shooting acouple 6RemAI both had 1/10 twist barrels.

I think alot depends on what you want to do with the 6x284 it's a good hunting caliber but a lousy volume varmit rifle. Got alot of good brass for the 6.5x284 than can be necked down.

Have one built on the P-17 Enfield action with a 1:10 heavy sporter fluted barrel (26 1/2") made by David Van Horn of Gilbert, Az. Been keeping careful track of the number of shots and barrel wear by inspecting with a Hawkeye bore scope. so far, nearly 900 rounds and everything still looks good. I'm shooting 100 and 105 gr Hornady soft points because this is a hunting rifle. Chronograph clocking shows average fps speeds of 3350, which is an accurate and comfortable load to shoot, expecially with the heavy (11 lb with scope) rifle.

To me, a great cartridge and lots of fun to poke holes in paper or animals - several deer and an antelope so far.

I can't tell from your OP, is the barrel already chambered? Or just an unchambered 6mm barrel threaded for a Mauser action?

Kludge : It is alll ready to go...chambered and threaded. It just needs installed and head spaced. Not sure of twist, better check that out. Thanks, HD1

I have owned lot's of rifles chambered in 6mm-284 and it is by far, my most favorite 6mm...

I normally shoot a 1-10" twist rate barrel with barrel lengths ranging from 26" to 32"...

Barrel life is pretty good as long as you don't shoot round after round and let the barrel get scorching hot. Take care of the barrel by keeping it clean and not letting it get too hot and you should still see 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 1,500 rds....
