Lightbulb 330 Dakota

I have really been thinking on building another rifle. I really wanted something in .338 cal. It seems to be the right size for everything I want to do. My original plan was to build a 338-06 but the ballistics were not quite what I was looking for. I recently discovered the 330 dakota and it seems to fit the bill. I was wondering if I would need to build this on a magnum strength action even though it will fit a 30-06 length. Opinions are welcome

The 330 Dakota is a belt-less magnum with a .545" case head. It has a capacity that is 5 grains more than a 338 Win Mag and 6 grains less than a 340 Weatherby. It operates at 60,000psi, which is slightly less than those two other cartridges.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "magnum strength action". You would certainly want a strong, modern action and it would need to be full length with the proper bolt face. The 330 Dakota has an OAL that is nearly identical to the 338-'06, so it's meant for a standard full length action.

My opinion? It's a belt-less 338 Win Mag. That makes it a very good cartridge. I would imagine the brass would be a little pricey and I wouldn't consider buying one unless you reload because I'm sure the factory ammo is ridiculous.

330 Dakota is a proprietory cartridge and brass runs around $37 per 20 and you need to call them about getting cases.

Dakota purchase the right to the ppc but Pindell keep the case rights and now Remington own Dakota and one day you may see a Rem chamber for the 6ppc.

Form and trim die sets are availible to convert 404 J cases. I really wanted something a little on the unique side and unbelted. I was also looking at 338 lapua but its something everyone seems to want or have. Any recomendations on a type of action to start with?

Or is there a better round that I might not yet know of?
