Sounds like a chamber cast is in order, to determine exactly what parent brass you're going to need for your rifle. It could be either case, but the difference would be fairly obvious; the 5.6x50R is rimmed and it's about .100" longer. Also, the bolt-face itself will be a dead give-away. Either it's ~.429" for the rimmed case or ~.378" for the 222 parent case. It's entirely possible the gunsmith built two similar chambers, one rimless and one rimmed.
Either way, you could shoot it "as-is", if you have dies made for it, or you can rechamber. Depending on what bolt face you have, there are good options available that are far less obscure. I'd be very interested to hear what you find out.
