hello every one
im new to this forum but have been reading alot of the posts in here.i have been reloading for awhile mostly pistols all smokeless powder i do alot shooting with my 50 cal muzzle loader.i purchased 45-70 pedisoli billy dixon sharps.i have every thing to reload drop tube compression die etc.i want to load 500 grain round nose i told to start out with 58 grains of fffg goex weighed i will be using .030 veg wad. the 500 grain bullet OAL is 1335 can any one give me a OAL that is safe {case and bullet}one of the guys told me at my gun club i can bell the case
and seat the bullet by hand into a empty case and then put it into the chamber and close the receiver and then the bullet will be touching the lands and groves and then back the bullet 8 to 10 thousands for a OAL i have never heard of pushing a bullet in a case by hand in a chamber is this possible can any one give me some info on powder weights using goex fffg powder or swiss 3f powder and load data for 405 grain bullets i know i need to tinker with these loads im just worried about air space and the OAL of the case and bullet if someone give me some load data with fffg or 3f swiss any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks bob

After determining How deep your bullet has to be seated , determine how deep in the case your bullet is seatedset your caliper to that depth & after dropping through a drop tube enough powder to get to that point And adding your .030 that would start you out at .030 compression. that would be a very good place to start out for your starting load , you would not have to worry about your powder settling & causing any air space, work up your load from there. After each powder increase check to make sure that the round chambers after loading the first one witht that charge. a bullet can only give so much compression befoe the bullet deforms & won't chamber, if using a compression die a case will only take somuch powder before deforming to where it won't chamber. If you check after each powder charge increase you will find out if you have any problems & know to stop before you have a whole mess or rounds that wont camber due to deformed bullets or brass

thank you for your time jim i will have to make a dumby round up and try that info u gave me as a rule of thumb does the bullet have to be to aleast to the crimp grove to be safe i have read that some roll crimp and some taper crimp and some dont crimp at all they just seat the bullet
all so i guess i would want to keep the compression to about 1/16 to about 1/8th to be safe
also if i push the bullet and casing into the chamber will that work to seat the bullet into the case then cclose the receiver to make up a dumby round i have never tried that before i dont think it would be that easy as that club member told me have you ever tried that

thnaks bob
