Sks Accuracy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got back from the range for a "Long legged" shooting session with my SKS "Coyote Gun". I had previously only shot it from a bench at 100 yds. and consistently gotten three round groups under an inch at that distance. Todays range had 200 yd. capability and I shot several groups at that distance. I was completely blown away !!!!!! Shooting from sandbags, I was getting three shot groups of 2" or less. The smallest was a mere 1 1/4",
FROM 200 YARDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I admit that it's highly customized, but is accuracy from an SKS usually even close to this, or do I have an extra accurate specimen ??? I was even shooting 122gr.HP Brown Bear (Barnaul) ammo. I always thought these rifles were kind of clunky and crude, but this rifle has completely changed my feelings about that !!! I own and have owned bolt guns that wouldn't outshoot it !!! I think I'll hang on to this one, and yes, it's still clunky and crude...but kind of in a beautiful way !!!!!!

SKS accuracy difference between Large primmers vs small primers

Okay, I just checked my range notes and for my Yugo SKS I get sub 2" 10 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards using cases primed with the small primer vs the large primers. Same bullets and powder charge just a change in the primers. Has anyone else done a simular test? Thanks.

My bone stock orginal chinese paratrooper 16" barrel will shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100yds using chinese norinco ammo. My 20" barreled chinese norinco scoped at 100yds was under 1" groups but around 1/2" groups when the flimsy scope mount came loose at the sight in. I now have a mosin nagant style mount on it but i haven't sighted it in yet. I'm very happy with the sks in its orginal condition with its accuracy that i'm seeing with me or my son shooting it we get the same groups out of them so its not a fluke.

I think we overlooked the sks's accuracy because we were too busy blowing off 30rd mags at empty soda cans playing rambo(kidding but true we were). It was like our first 22 semi only louder.

I think all the sks's can be accurate with the right ammo. As far as the trigger I lube my triggers with moly. It will lessen the trigger pull by 50% right away and more as it works in. I lube all my guns with moly too just a little will do.

I'm all in, lets build one just because we can !!! Tjrahl: let me know what you figure out regarding pressures and such. I can't imagine that the 401 would have more pressure than the 7.62x39, since it's basically a straight-wall case. The overall cartridge length looks pretty good as well. How handy will it be to use the parent rifles cartridge case to form into the new cartridge case. Especially since it's kind of an obscure cartridge anyway. I'll start looking for a reforming die for the 401. HD1

Now if I could only improve the trigger
Oh but you can! It turns out to be an excellent design that was rather crudely executed in the name of cheaper, faster production. Go to http://www.kivaari.com/. For about $65 he does a fantastic "Safety match trigger" job. He'll check and correct "negative sear engagement" and provide you with a match grade trigger you'll love. Simply fill out the form from his site and mail the trigger group to him. Turn around on a full job is one week.

No I don't work for him.. I'm just a very satisfied customer.

I was told to sell mine and buy a mini-30

Whoever told you that was not your friend.:(;)

I really like Rugers in general, and I love the Mini-Thirty as a concept ,and they win hands-down in the looks department, but I have yet to shoot one that could match a pretty average SKS in accuracy right out of the box. They can be upgraded, but not cheaply and not nearly as easily as the SKS.

I don't sell guns.

I didn't. Maybe I'll have to find one do a shoot off and compare. Thanks pisgah and Davers
It is nice to be in good company!:D

Dannytoro: You know I've wondered and asked that same question for a while now. Having a barrel made to fit would be no problem, but finding someone to install, headspace and tweak the gas system seems practically unheard of. I've made several inquiries on-line and have hade virtually "ZERO" luck. You might try Murray's Guns, maybe they could/would do it. Good luck and let me know if you find anyone to do it !!!!! HD1

I have a yugo sks and its pretty accurate. I shoot off hand and im a horrible shot shooting this way and I can usually shoot what im aiming at (such as 20 oz water bottles from 50-100 yards). It currently has a ramline stock but im about to switch over to a collapsible stock, remove the excess off the barre, put a smaller muzzle brake, front grip and tactical sling. Maybe a red dot scope but I cant find a decent looking one that i like yet.

The old SKS did it AGAIN !!! My custom "Coyote" gun has turned into a great little deer rifle. This year is a dandy 7pt. (16" spread) with a single shot at 164 paces. I hit it in the front shoulder, it took three short jumps and expired. I must admit, I was shooting off of a bi-pod. I was again using Brown Bear 123gr. HP ammo and it worked perfectly. For some strange reason, I enjoy hunting with this rifle !!! HD1

Leverite: I have tried several types of 7.62x39 ammo through my SKS, but Brown Bear 123 hp is really accurate from lot to lot and is very clean burning with virtually no residue !!! Best of all it's like $142.50 per 500 from Cheaper Than Dirt. Heck I couldn't handload better performing ammo any cheaper myself. Give it a try, I'll bet you like it !!! I just ordered a thousand rounds myself . I'll post pics of my little Coyote Gun soon . HD1

I have no doubt of the accuracy of the sks at much greater distances than 200 yards. We shoot at a pit up to 900 but at 500-600 yards and a little skill the sks is definetly accurate. I know that the velocity at that range is quite deminished and not practical to hunt but if you have the distance try it out on some metal targets. I run a yugo sks with a adjustable stock with bipod and simple 4x30 Bsa scope I had the barrel re crowned but not shortend and put the upgraded firing pin in it. As far as the trigger I left it alone i like the small creep from the seer catching till it fires and once you know your trigger it is second nature and does not throw off your aim. This gun will consistently hit a 2'x2' metal plate at 500 yards all day long.

I found my two chinese norinco sks's to be very accurate. I only shoot my two chinese sks's because there so accurate. The rest just sit in the safe.
At first the russian barnaul ammo was the most accurate for an sks. I beliele the russian bear ammo is manufactured by barnaul too. I have only tried the norinco ammo in my norinco sks's.
The biggest problem with the sks's accuracy is the bore diameter of the rifle and the diameter of the bullets can range from .308" and the way to .3115" on the bullets. If you have the bore diameter of .310" and the bullet is .308" the shots will have flyers of course. The american made ammo at first was .308" on the bullets.

The only thing i do to all my triggers is to put some moly on them.

I have an older yugo 59/66 i use for coyote hunting here in Ohio.it is no tack driver but way more accurate than any ak i ever fired , i can put a 20 round group all in in the black on a 12 inch target at 120 yards, far as fernwood has to shoot at their range.not rapid firing of course but one after the other.it tends to spread out as the barrel heats up.never tried any real precision shooting with it.Most shots are 100 yrds or less here.Next trip to range ill try it out.5 shot groups.I do have it scoped with a 4 power.

Pretty big generalization, I would say. I have owned over a dozen Chinese SKSs thru the last 40 years or so (we used to be able to buy them brand-new for $70), any of which would shoot at least 2 MOA with the issue sights and the old Chinese ball ammo that used to be so abundant and cheap -- and this includes the stubby "Paratrooper" model which is the only one I still have , and which absolutely thrives on the Russian Silver Bear ammo. One, which I highly modified and scoped, would shoot 1/2 MOA with boring regularity. Having also messed with many Mausers, Enfields, and Garands, I'd say the average SKS will hang in there with any average issue military rifle out there in the accuracy department.
