West Tx Mule deer

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

My son and I just got back from West Tx. We both got two nice bucks, and the hunting was tough with the heat and the full moon.
We both used 270 Wins. His with 130 gr partition at 220 yards, and mine with 130 gr ballistic tips at about 125 yards. The results were immediate.
This was a great hunt, and I got to stalk a 378 Elk that was in the flats but it wasn't to be, however, the next day, another hunter did shoot it. He was using a 300 Weatherby Mag. ( My 270 Win would have been a better choice,,,ha)

My first, second, third, forth, and fifth shots were at feral hogs that I managed to kill three of them. They must have followed me from Jack County.

The hunting continues...

Good for you and Clay, Tom!

Must have shot yours rather late in the day.

Will be in touch this weekend if things go right. Fighting a huge cold right now.

Looks like you all had a great hunt! Congrats on harvesting those two great bucks!

Thanks guys. It was a great trip, they certainly weren' the biggest racks shot, but due to the moon and weather, no one turned down a shot at a good buck. There just weren't too many moving. I'd show a picture of the Elk but for some reason, the pic won't transfer.
I will say that out of 9 hunters, the 270's were the smallest calibers used. Just about everyone had ultra mags.
These deer will field dress around 200 lbs on average, and your shots will average under 200 yds, really no need for anything bigger.
One guy who had never shot a deer, got the biggest one. He also shot and missed another one the day before. His was a 184BC.
But with a cold, fever, sore throat, I thought I had better tag out.
Good luck this season to all.

Fine looking critters. Beats anything we have in central Texas, that's for sure!
