Only one?

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

This is a very hypothetical question that was recently asked of me by a good friend and I was surprised how hard it was to answer, I thought it would be good to put out here and see if anyone can answer better than I can....

If you could have only one handgun to cover all your needs, which would it be? Why?

A couple questions first, Why would a person have to be restricted to one handgun?

What are the anticipated uses of the handgun?

This one again?

Hypothetical or not, it just ain't the way things are in my life, therefore I don't have to limit myself to just one. But if I did, I'd probably go with a .357 mag, probably a 4" M66 or a Ruger GP100. But probably the GP100, they'll hold up a little better considering having only one hand gun means it's gonna get shot a lot more.

But the caliber choice is based on the fact that brass & bullets are easy to come by and inexpensive. And I have the option of shooting 38's, either +P or standard loads, and .357 mag. for serious business.

I would still like to know the basis of the question, why only one?

I think I'd have to agree with Submoa. I don't own one, but I've done a ton of research on guns over the last six months, and a .357 with a 4 inch barrel seems to win the prize for all around cover all your needs type of weapon. The GP100, which is on my list of guns to buy in 2017, seems to be at the top of that list. It's good for home defense, range use, out in the woods, in your vehicle, for carrying, etc. And with the ammo choices, it is very versatile.

A 357/38 Special revolver with a 4 to 6" barrel would get my vote. While I've owned a 6" 357, I traded it for a 4.2" barrel Ruger GP 100 for more convenience.

Very versatile with loads from 38 Special wadcutters to heavy 180 or 200 grain 357 Magnum.

IF I lived in an area where there were bigger critters like brown bear, I would up it to a 44 Spl./44 Magnum.

There is a way to determine exactly the best caliber. Make a list of everything you could ever need or desire that one handgun for. varmints, small game, medium game, large game, self defense against dogs, wolves, snakes, bears, possum, people, ammo availability and variety, shoot-ability, recoil. etc.

Most of the auto loader calibers (9, 40, 45, etc.) have a narrow range of power and aren't able to offer the flexibility of a revolver caliber.

Home defense. Urban environment. Plinking. Camping security. No big animals. Just BG. My friends financial situation is bringing him to this point and question.

Only one handgun

Simply cannot be done. That is why I own a bunch of them. All the best...

Sounds like your friend is going to shoot at two legged predators and paper?
Also concerned about money or the lack thereof?

Tell him to check out a HiPoint in 9mm.

I think I'm gonna have to cheerfully, respectfully disagree with some of the above posters. Men in this country who lived and died by their guns much more than most of us ever will, did just fine with "only one". I have only one, a Kimber Warrior SOC 1911. I can, if need be, take from squirrels to man to hogs to deer with it. Ammo is readily available and of great variety. An old friend of mine who is retired special forces told me years ago that the handgun is only there to get you safely to your rifle out in the truck.

I agree that the 4" .357 revolver is probably one of the most versatile, all-round handguns out there.

He lives in NJ so CCW is not a concern. The 357 / 38 revolver does seem like a solid option. Capacity is a minor issue but I am sure for his purposes 6 rounds should be enough. Get proficient with speed loaders also.

That.

The question, politely, is stupid.

He lives in N.J., tell him to buy a short barreled SG. Its better for most everything he would use it for.

I've played that game on the net several times and choose a Smith 4" M66. However, in real life I once faced that situation by moving to Germany for 3 years. Took only one handgun and that was my custom 1911 5" in .45 ACP with a Colt .22LR conversion kit.

Hicap 9mm semi auto in the size and make of your choice. Lots of good ones out there in a wide range price points. I can't think of another handgun more able to fullfill the requirements listed above. I just saw an E-model Ruger SR on sale for $279, a Taurus 92 for about $300. Myself it'd be a Sig 226 SAO Legion with 18rd Macgar magazines. yeah it's pricy, but if you only have one, why not the best. Great defensive gun, lots of top notch defensive loads available, cheap plinking ammo available, easily carried as a belt gun and more than adequate for camping security.

Glock 17 or 19. Or m&p in 9mm. Or sig, forget everything else, all others will just cost you more money in the long run , because you will eventually wind up with one and won't truely be satisfied until you do. My 2 cents...

One pistol couldn't cover all of MY needs. Too many of them. I've not yet seen the deer pistol that doubles as a concealed carry gun.

Yep, one could never encompass all my needs, and it absolutely couldn't satisfy my wants either.

These "what if" questions are rather silly IMO.
