Permit letters of recommendation

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I was wondering what you think are critical components of a letter of recommendation that accompanies the permit application. I am NOT asking for form letters but am interested in knowing what info I should ask my references to include, again, in general terms, when they write my letter.

You really should at least say where you are located. Are you referring to permits to own a handgun or carry a handgun? Letters of recommendation aren't required for either in most places, so you'll want to get the best advice from someone in your area. If you put your location in your profile, it will automatically appear in the heading of each post.

My location is in my profile but you're right I should have mentioned it in my post. I am in CT and there is a requirement for letters of recommendation. The town issues a 60 day temporary permit (Hopefully) and then the State police issue the permement license, which is for conceled carry.

Just a thought but I would think you want people that have known you for a long time. Your temperment, integrety, reliability/responsibility would be things I'd want in the letter.
Glad my state did not require that.

My state requires references but no letters. I guess they just call and ask what they want. I don't even know if they called, neither of my references said anything.

You can call your sheriff's office and ask specifically, they are required to tell you everything they need from you.

That said, your reference should list how long they have known you personally, and maybe an example of how you handled a situation. You want to get the letter from somebody that has known you at least 5 years and is not related to you. Make sure the letters are professional in nature and typed in a standardized format.

Good to include something about how you treat the spouse, kids, neighbors, dog, etc.

I'd say something about military service, but returning military are on some kind of subversive list from the DOJ lately. Depends on how long ago the mil service was?

Mention lack of alcohol / drug use. Criminal activity. Honesty, character.

Do not confuse liberal with liberty, especially when the Right to Keep arms is concerned.
